TNQ Drought Hub: Building resilience to future drought
About us
The Tropical North Queensland Drought Resilience and Adoption Hub (TNQ Hub) led by James Cook University is helping land managers and communities build resilience to future drought. The TNQ Hub is led by James Cook University and based out of the JCU Ideas Lab in Cairns. Working in a ‘hub and spoke’ model, the TNQ Hub is partnered closely with six natural resource management (NRM) groups across Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) to deliver drought resilience activities across the region. Funded by the Australian Governments Future Drought Fund under the Drought Resilience Research and Adoption Program, the TNQ Hub is one of eight Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs across Australia established to support land managers and communities prepare for drought. The Drought Resilience Research and Adoption Program objective is to invest into collaborative research, development, extension, adoption and commercialization activities. These activities will help land managers and Tropical North Queensland communities to become more prepared for, and resilient to, future droughts.

This year, the TNQ Drought Hub partnered with James Cook University to deliver "Sandpit to Seed", a fund that specifically supports Proof of Concept, Prototype or Minimum Viable Product projects to boost sustainability in agriculture. Here’s a snapshot of the two innovations selected: 🌿 EcoSprAI: Using AI-driven image analysis, this tech pinpoints weeds like Prickly Acacia and maps them for precise chemical application, cutting costs and reducing environmental impact. 🤖 BeefVantage: An AI chatbot that provides beef producers with personalised, trusted advice, sparking curiosity and innovation for more resilient and sustainable operations. These projects highlight the power of tech and innovation in shaping a stronger future for our region’s producers. Stay tuned for final reports. https://lnkd.in/gU4fPDNs

We were proud to support, and be a part of this years event. Congratulations to all involved bringing together traditional knowledge and technology to create solutions to significant challenges impacting remote communities. Hub Director, David Phelps, Innovation Program Lead Tony Matchett and Adoption Officer Keerah Steele all had the privilege of being a part of the datathon. Tony said, "“It was a powerful event and something very different for some of the participants. But it was exciting change to see the shared future and vision of the different representatives wanting to work with trusted partners to get things happening on country.”
