We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our entire network for making this year truly memorable. This has been a year of tremendous growth, innovation, and collaboration within the semiconductor sector and beyond. From forging new partnerships to hosting impactful events and driving meaningful initiatives, 2024 has been a year to celebrate. We’re incredibly grateful to our partners, supporters, and the broader community. The S3B team will be taking a break until the 6th of January but will be back in the new year with exciting new initiatives. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season.

Enabling increased participation of NSW and Australia in the global semiconductor industry
About us
The Semiconductor Sector Service Bureau (S3B) was established in July 2022 with funding from the NSW Government through the Office of the Chief Scientist & Engineer to enhance the capability, workforce, market connectedness and competitiveness of the NSW and Australian semiconductor sector. S3B is hosted as a joint venture between The University of Sydney (USyd), Macquarie University (MQ) and UNSW Sydney (UNSW). The entire consortium, in partnership with the CSIRO, the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) and participants from across the Australian semiconductor industry, represents a globally networked, represents a cross-functional grouping that spans the semiconductor value chain. S3B is funded annually by the NSW Government and the host universities. S3B is working at the nexus between industry, universities and government to increase the commercial impact of semiconductors by building capacity, connectivity and collaboration throughout the sector. To enable the increased participation of NSW and Australia in the global semiconductor supply chain S3B will perform 4 key functions: 1. Broker on behalf of many Australian projects to consolidate the potential of collective relationships with the semiconductor supply chain. 2. Offer a strategic and functional semiconductor market intelligence capability. 3. Promote and facilitate access to semiconductor micro-credentialled training to address skill gaps identified in the industry. 4. Coordinate and foster collaboration in the semiconductor sector in NSW and Australia.

October was our biggest month of engagement since the launch of S3B. We connected with 800 people through the annual Semi Down Under event co-hosted in partnership with Morse Micro and the inaugural Semiconductor Australia 2024 co-hosted with BluGlass Limited (ASX: BLG) and ShareCafe.

Congratulations to USYD Society of Light for this incredible event. It was great to see so many people in the room interested in photonic chip design and gaining hands-on experience.
What a fantastic few days! Thank you to everyone who helped to make our Semiconductor Design Workshop a shining success. What was the most interesting thing you learned? We hope that all students, researchers and industry members who attended took away some valuable insights. We are proud to contribute to this growing sector and we look forward to future opportunities to share knowledge. Thank you to our keynote speakers: Wim Bogaerts, Nadia Court, Stephen Bartlett, Guanghui Ren, and Niels Quack. Thank you to our esteemed panellists: Madhu J., Pierre Wahl, Alexander Arriola, Vincent Choo, Ian Mann, Nard Dumoulin Stuyck, and Mike Boers. Thank you to our sponsors: Semiconductor Sector Service Bureau (S3B), SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, Optica Sydney Local Section, Luceda Photonics, Sydney Nano, University of Sydney and Faculty of Engineering - University of Sydney, for their generous contributions. Thank you to Benjamin Eggleton for chairing a dynamic panel discussion, and to our academic advisor Alvaro Casas Bedoya for helping us build our skills and make this event possible. Thanks to all who attended for sharing your curiosity and passion, and special thanks to those who travelled to join us this week! Interested in joining or keeping up with our activities? If we had to pick a theme on our September reflection, it would be showcasing Australia's semiconductor capabilities. We hosted our first international networking event in Taiwan, exhibited with six incredible Australian start-ups at Semicon Taiwan and published a paper in the annual InnovationAus.com Industry Papers: https://lnkd.in/gfUADUcU

We are looking at some of the highlights from the S3B network across 2024. In August, we teamed up with the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility for a capability workshop, attended Cicada Innovations x Tech23 and hosted our first international delegation to Taiwan with the incredible support of Lawrence Chang.

We are looking back at 2024 and reflecting on some of the highlights. July inlcuded visits to the US for the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and Malaysia for the annual IPC conference. Closer to home, Semiconductors took centre stage at the InnovationAus.com Innovation Papers event, and we announced our first round of MPW subsidies. #YearInReview
