Announcing the kick-off a 4-year DOE Microelectronics Science Research Center - Enabling Science for Transformative Energy-Efficient Microelectronics (ESTEEM) at Stanford /SLAC ( plus Gatech, Northwestern, UT, U Tenn), focus on research of energy efficient 3D logic/memory and photonics materials and devices.

It was a great pleasure to participate in the annual Photonics21 meeting in Brussels. It was a cornerstone for the photonics community, focusing on the bright future of European Photonics, its competitive advantage and the critical role it can play for technology revolutions in many fields if our society. At nanoPHAB we are at the forefront of the photonics revolution, specializing in custom nanofabrication for free space and integrated photonics in many materials and semiconductors. With thousands of devices and prototypes already developed and fabricated, our work has propelled advancements in diverse sectors like quantum technology, sensing, metrology, and bio-photonics. The challenges involved in high-tech innovation as well as the need for dedicated manufacturing centers and skilled professionals, highlight the importance of academic-industrial collaborations within the European photonics ecosystem. Since last April 2024, nanoPHAB partnered with NanoLab at the Eindhoven University of Technology, in order to provide cost-effective nanofabrication services to better support academic groups and research-based projects in the Eindhoven area and beyond. As we participate in Photonics21, we are energized to contribute and align with the goals of the European photonics community. One of the challenges of cramming smarter and more powerful electronics into ever-shrinking devices is developing the tools and techniques to analyze the materials that make them up with increasingly intimate precision. Physicists at Michigan State University have taken a long-awaited step on that front with an approach that combines high-resolution microscopy with ultrafast lasers. The technique enables researchers to spot misfit atoms in semiconductors with unparalleled precision. Semiconductor physics labels these atoms as “defects,” which sounds negative, but they’re usually added to materials on purpose and are critically important to the performance of semiconductors in today’s — and tomorrow’s — devices. “This is particularly relevant for components with nanoscale structures,” said Tyler Cocker, the Jerry Cowen Endowed Chair in Experimental Physics and leader of the new study. The 47th edition of the International Semiconductor Conference - CAS 2024, an IEEE event, (https://lnkd.in/dWjsYbD9) took place in Sinaia, Romania, October 9 - 11, 2024. Gastón García from the Centro de Micro-Análisis de Materiales was there to promote the RIANA - project to potential users, presenting the opportunities that project offers researchers from academia and industry in the field of #nanoscience and #nanotechnology. Global stars of optoelectronics and terahertz science gather in Vilnius on October 1-4! ✨ This week scientific conference APROPOS 19 will take place at the FTMC. It is the largest such event in the Baltic States and is organised every two years ⚡ Faster communications, 6G technologies, security systems, new semiconductor materials, semiconductor chips, quantum innovations - world-renowned scientists and innovators will be discussing these and other topics 🌐 The main organiser of the conference, physicist Prof. Dr. habil. Gintaras Valušis, Head of the Department of Optoelectronics at the FTMC, talks about the event and its relevance: "We are using 5G technologies and we say that it is very good. But people in science are already talking about 6G and 7G! These are about even higher frequencies, even higher information flows, expanded sensor capabilities. Thursday, 19 September 2024 at 8:00 Active Materials J11 In this invited talk, our PhD student Michael Mckinlay will present his latest research and vision on nanostructured metal oxides as promising electrodes for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). The work introduces a new physical vapour deposition technique to achieve ultra-high electron affinities in metal oxides, leading to larger surface charge densities and TENG with higher output powers and more efficient energy conversion. Key findings - Extensive study on the topology and structure of nanostructured thin films based on metal oxides for energy harvesting devices and self-powered sensors. - Investigation into the impacts of PVD conditions on the surface charge density and TENG output characteristics. - Analysis of the crystal quality of metal oxide thin films and power conversion efficiency of TENG. This research was conducted with the support of Glasgow Microelectronics (meLAB) University of Glasgow and the Institute of Thin Films, Sensors and Imaging (ITFSI) University of the West of Scotland under the supervision of Dr Carlos Garcia Nuñez, Hadi Heidari, Des Gibson

Our next post features PhD candidate Hanifa Tidjani, who is currently working in the team of Menno Veldhorst at QuTech. Her paper explores an exciting new paradigm for fabricating qubit devices in semiconductor materials. Here's what she had to say about her recent publication (available at https://lnkd.in/dyaYDhDA): ‘’In the rapidly growing field of semiconductor spin qubits, opportunities are still arising for new research avenues. So far, semiconductor qubits are typically created by confining electrons or holes in planar two-dimensional quantum dot arrays. Inspired by research done on bilayer germanium heterostructures, I asked the question: could we leverage the extra dimension to confine single holes in parallel planes? This question has a few motivations. Firstly, forming three-dimensional lattices of quantum dots to host qubits offers compact scaling opportunities and higher connectivity. Second, novel physics may emerge from the unique coupling configurations; for example, one could envision making electron-hole bilayers to simulate exciton condensation.   Typically in planar devices, we are able to confine single holes (or electrons) using electrostatic gating, where electric fields from a so-called plunger gate create a quantum dot within which holes are trapped. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to use a single plunger gate to form vertically coupled double quantum dots (DQD), on bilayer germanium heterostructures. To find the position of the quantum dots, we perform triangulation by analyzing the relative electrostatic coupling of the dots to the surrounding gates and confirm that the DQD is formed in the z direction.     Currently, we are extending this method to form a 3D array (x-y-z) by accumulating double quantum dots beneath four plunger gates. While the research opportunities arising by the addition of another layer are vast, so are the challenges. Everyone was beaming when our own Dr. Julie Lefebvre, VP of Emerging Technologies, and Dr. John Hepburn, CEO of Mitacs, presented University of Ottawa PhD student Edith Yeung with the top poster award at Quantum Days. Ms. Yeung’s poster demonstrated that nanowires and quantum dot technologies can team up to refine semiconductors. Entitled “Hybrid integration of III-V nanowires and SiN photonic integrated circuits for on-chip generation of indistinguishable photons”, these new options could help refine how we communicate in the future. #EurekaBravo Edith!
