About us

Envision a world where the extraction of finite resources for construction is a thing of the past. That's the vision behind Five Mile Radius. We are an architecture and furniture studio specialising in designing with construction and demolition waste. Since our establishment in 2019, we've successfully diverted nearly 50 tonnes of waste from landfills through our furniture line and designed $5 million worth of building stock using circular economy principles. Our mission is to assist Brisbane in transitioning to a circular construction culture founded on respect for material resources. What sets Five Mile Radius apart is our ability to both design and manufacture under one roof. We serve as a one-stop shop for both corporations and the public looking to create sustainable spaces, expediting the transition to a circular future. Interest in our business continues to grow, with 2024 marking our collaboration with some of Brisbane's largest developers and architects on city-shaping projects, and online store sales increasing by 600%. We believe Brisbane needs this business, and that together with our cities design community, we will catalyse Brisbane's transition to a sustainable built environment.

  • We’re excited to share that Matso’s Sunshine Coast Brewery has won the Hospitality & Tourism category at the 2024 Sustainability Awards by Architecture & Design (Australia)! This project has been a massive team effort, and we couldn’t be prouder of the result. Collaborating with Knight Wilson Architects, Place Design Group, and a team of talented makers and consultants, we transformed the heritage-listed 'Joe’s Waterhole' into a brewery, restaurant, and beer garden that champions circular construction and celebrates the local community. Key features of the project: - Solar Passive Design: Natural ventilation and thoughtful orientation create comfortable spaces year-round. - Hybrid Structure: A combination of renewable timber and recyclable steel for durability and flexibility. - Recycled Materials: Blockwork, concrete, cladding, and steel were reused wherever possible, alongside locally made Blackbutt timber trusses. - Adaptability: Designed as a flexible, future-proof shed form. - Biophilic Design: Strong connections to nature through garden views, natural light, and landscaping. We’re thrilled to see this project recognised for its sustainability and contribution to hospitality design. Huge thanks to GoodDrinks and Matsos Broome Brewery for trusting us with your vision and to everyone who played a part in bringing this to life. #SustainabilityAwards #Winner #HospitalityDesign #CircularEconomy #MatsosBrewery

  • We’re excited to share that Five Mile Radius received a Special Mention at the 2024 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards last week. Reflecting on the incredible network of people and businesses we’ve collaborated with over the past year, we’re feeling humbled by the supportive community we’re building here in Brisbane. Working with reclaimed and salvaged construction materials often comes down to knowing the right people, and we’ve seen firsthand that the circular economy truly thrives on collaboration—something we experience every day in our work. A huge thank you Brisbane Economic Development Agency , Adrian Schrinner and to our Brisbane community for supporting our studio in so many new and exciting ways. Special congratulations to our friends at Blaklash for winning the Business Chamber Queensland Small Business Award, and to Rino for their outstanding achievement—taking home three awards, including the top honour in our category, the dentsu Environmental Sustainability in Business Award, for their groundbreaking facility at Pinkenba. If you’re curious about the future of construction and demolition waste recycling, be sure to check out their work at Waterfront Brisbane Dexus. Lastly, this recognition belongs to our team. Transforming waste into polished products isn’t always glamorous, but our design and workshop teams consistently rise to the challenge and make what we do possible ❤️ #LMBA2024 #BuildWithWhatYouveGot #Sustainability #CircularEconomy

I’m really excited to see what FIVE MILE RADIUS are creating for our new Arup Workplace in Brisbane’s CBD. Opening in early 2025. This week a few of us had the pleasure of joining a workshop tour with Clare Kennedy at Five Mile Radius a research, design, and manufacturing studio in Brisbane who make furniture entirely from natural materials and construction waste. It was inspiring to hear their story and see their creativity and craftsmanship in action. Standouts for me: ◾ Five Mile Radius – the name comes from a challenge, to build from materials found within five miles of their homes, set by Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi. ◾ Circularity – not only made from waste, but the furniture is also designed to be easily disassembled for future reuse. ◾ Old telegraph poles - made into seats (brings back happy memories from my childhood in Brissy). At Arup, sustainable development is everything. Our new Brisbane office fit out is creating a place that benefits people, nature and the climate through material reuse. I can’t wait to step into the new office and see this vision come to life. Rob Fox Jakki Thompson Kylie Armstrong Tessa Beck Olivia Ryan-McInally Immanuel I. #WeAreArup #Brisbane #RegenerativeDesign

Our design for global sustainable development firm Arup's new workplace on Yuggera and Turrbal Country, Brisbane, Australia, explores new territory in sustainable office environments for a hybrid-working world. Underpinned by our latest global research, the workplace will cater to Arup's unique hybrid work patterns, support collaboration and bring transparency to its inner workings. Hassell Principal Carolyn Solley says the workplace design will provide fewer workstations and more bespoke spaces for quiet work and collaboration. “The design of Arup, Brisbane, goes far beyond a physical expression of a contemporary workplace," says Carolyn. "It synthesises Arup's organisational values and environmental commitment and reflects its unique culture.” The bespoke fit-out currently under construction by Buildcorp brings together a design 'super team', including our own workplace designers, workplace strategists FreeState, First Nations designers Blaklash, circularity consultants Five Mile Radius, project managers Acuity, and branding, design, and wayfinding experts Studio Ongarato. The design team will work alongside Arup's own sustainability consultants, landscape designers, and engineers. The project is due for completion in early 2025. • Happy to announce that Five Mile Radius is a finalist in the 2024 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards! Since 2019, we’ve been transforming demolition waste into design solutions, and we’re proud to be recognized for the Dentsu Environmental Sustainability in Business Award. Five Mile Radius is a genuine and growing force in helping our city thrive. The most fulfilling part of our work is serving as a connector between architects, interior designers, building owners, developers, suppliers, stockpilers, and manufacturers—designing innovative and interesting uses for our regions existing resources. We believe Brisbane needs this business, and together with our community, we will help transition the city towards a better built environment. In the past two years, we’ve diverted 56 tonnes of waste from landfills through our furniture range and designed $8 million worth of building stock based on circularity principles. In 2023, we saw a 600% growth in sales of our all-waste furniture range. Additionally, we repurposed 52 tonnes of concrete, 40 telegraph poles, and 1,100 meters of hardwood decking. We’ve also collaborated on major city projects like Waterfront Brisbane and delivered courses at all major Queensland architecture universities. Our motto: Build with what you’ve got. We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our team and close collaborators. Being part of something different and new comes with uncertainty. We’ve made some mistakes along the way, but this talented and agile gang continues to work tremendously hard in pursuit of the dream. Thanks guys. See you at the #LMBA2024 Gala Ceremony next month! #CircularEconomy #SustainableDesign #Architecture #FiveMileRadius #LMBA2024 Adrian Schrinner Brisbane Economic Development Agency

  • Thanks for the mention! It’s been a privilege to contribute to the incredible transformation at Waterfront Brisbane. The project's commitment to sustainability and innovation aligns perfectly with our ethos at Five Mile Radius—showcasing the power of reusing construction materials. Seeing granite, timber, and even decommissioned steel pipes turned into new furniture and planters for the precinct really highlights what’s possible when we rethink waste. We’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of sustainable design in Queensland.

The deconstruction phase of Waterfront Brisbane is officially complete! The time lapse shows the phenomenal transformation that occurred to fully dismantle Eagle Street Pier and ready the site for the permanent structure. This deconstruction phase saw 31,580 tonnes of material removed from site, with 30,990 tonnes of this successfully diverted from landfill. This equates to more than a 98% recycling rate, which far surpasses our original goal of 90%. These 30,990 tonnes of material were: - donated to Peggy's Place, Queensland's largest shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence; - recycled by Rino and converted into high-quality construction products for re-use at other construction projects in Queensland; - repurposed by FIVE MILE RADIUS, who turned granite slabs, glass and stainless steel balustrade, timber decking, cobble stones and decommissioned fire sprinkler steel pipes into furniture for the future precinct; - reclaimed by Five Mile Radius, who turned the old Riverwalk into planters that are currently located beside Naldham House; salvaged by Heritage Tree Care Brisbane, who converted waste soil and timber into rich forest mulch that will nurture trees and plants at the Sherwood Arboretum; and - preserved by Australian Heritage Specialists Pty Ltd, who salvaged 80 historic timber piles dating back to the 1860s-1880s, which will be used for a public art display and integrated into the future precinct's public realm. Waterfront Brisbane’s sustainability approach aligns with its co-owners Dexus and Dexus Wholesale Property Fund (DWPF)’s purpose to improve futures through long-term, socially responsible and environmentally sustainable real estate investment.

  • Cheers Hutchies! You took our design vision and made it happen. Thanks for navigating the complexities of working with recycled materials and designing for climate. A true collaboration, and the project is a winner because of it. We're always excited to explore new ways to integrate sustainable practices into future projects.

The award winning Matso's Sunshine Coast Brewery provides a new lease on life to the old Joe’s Waterhole in Eumundi. The refurbishment and expansion pays respect to the 1920s tin and timber pub, carrying a simple material palette throughout the new ‘shed’ like extension. Working closely with designers Five Mile Radius, Hutchies recycled a range of materials and existing furniture from the old building — creating a range of the new venue’s seating, tables and fixtures throughout. From the striking timber structure through to the furniture throughout, a significant effort has been made to tie the character of the existing pub into the new spaces.
