Every now and then we need a little reminder of who we are, and why we do what we do. This poem by Becky Hemsley resonates with us so profoundly and helps us remember our mission. So for all of the lady tradies out there, the apprentices, the career switchers, and any woman working twice as hard to be considered half as good - this one is for you. You can purchase this poem in Becky’s Etsy store - so please do that if you wish to share it or re-post. #likeagirl

We are really proud to partner with Canberra Institute of Technology to support and empower more women into skilled trade roles. If you are interested in an apprenticeship at CIT, follow the link in the post below or reach out us at: Buildlikeagirl.com.au #womenintrades #femaletradies #apprenticeships #VET #canberrainstituteoftechnology
Empowering women in trades 🙍♀️🛠️ At CIT, we are proud to partner with Build Like A Girl, a transformative program aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of women in trade roles and apprenticeships. Did you know women in trade roles and apprenticeships only make up about 2% nationally? The program is designed to not only incentivise women to pursue and complete their apprenticeships but to support and foster an ongoing conversation about the importance of female participation in trades. Research consistently shows that greater diversity leads to increased innovation and productivity. By welcoming more women into construction and trade roles, we can create a healthier, more dynamic industry for everyone involved. Ready to make your mark in trades? Happy #nationaltradiesday! A day to celebrate the blood, sweat and actual tears you often go through when working in a trade role. We are so privileged to do the work we do with women all over Australia to help them follow their dream of being a tradie. Part of that work is giving them a hand when we can, and scholarships providing funding are a great way to do that. Amy Grytas, Amy Adams and Ivana Groves all received $500 bucks from the inaugural Build Like A Girl and Zonta Club of Canberra scholarship for 2024. Nominated by their teachers at Canberra Institute of Technology they have demonstrated outstanding skill, perseverance and commitment to their training and on site work. We look forward to partnering with more organisations in the future so we can continue to support and assist women on their trade journey!

Check out this latest article where our founder Jo Farrell explains why we are not seeing the critical mass of women in construction that we need, and the negative impact that sexual harassment is having on retaining women in trades. Women only make up around 15 per cent of the construction industry, according to a March report from Master Builders Australia and still make up less than 3 per cent of trade occupations. This last figure has remained virtually unchanged since the late 1980s. So, why is this still the case? Jo Farrell is General Manager of Kane Constructions... and founder of 'Build Like a Girl' - a not-for-profit organisation encouraging women to pursue trade occupations. She was also this year's ACT Australian of the Year for her work championing young women in this male-dominated space... inspired by her own experiences and stories from other women working in construction and trades. We are loving the enthusiasm NexGen have when speaking to our future women in construction! If you don’t know who they are or what they do - then check out the below and give them a follow! #nexgen #womeninconstruction #findyourfuture #womensupportingwomen
Skills gap in construction? NexGen is #THE solution. We’re addressing it by speaking directly to students about the incredible range of careers available in the industry. Our programs are designed to build the next generation of leaders and drive meaningful change. Next term, we’re already set to speak to over 1,000 students through our High School Program. We then connect any student who is interested in construction with industry for work experience opportunities and we have been facilitating placements. But we can't do it alone! We’re looking for corporate partners to join us in this movement and be part of the transformation. Want to help shape the future of construction? Get in touch! hello@nex-gen.au #inspiringthenextgeneration #womeninconstruction #nexgen #diversity #inclusion #bethechange #solutiontoaproblem #skillsgap #highschoolprogram #ambassadors #industrypartners

When marginalised and vulnerable people are under represented and don’t have access to the same opportunities- then yes - Quotas, targets and affirmative action are required. It’s not “Woke”. It’s being a decent human who believes everyone should be given the opportunity to have a go. Fantastic response below from Maria Thattil on polarised politics that harm our most marginalised cohort of people in community.
On #QandA there was a question from this gentleman where he expressed his concern about the ‘public schools pushing a woke mindset, surge in immigration, and woke-ness in climate policies.’ He asked ‘how long before Australia becomes unrecognisable in terms of the fairness, opportunity and merit-basis that attracted him?’ This is my response. When left and right movements are extreme, you have issues either way. There are problems within all social movements. But the word ‘woke’ is often used to dismiss human rights issues and systemic + structural inequality - and that’s when I have something to say. I just love and appreciate the national platform I have to do so. Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) #QandA ICON Management

Our priority will always be our apprentices and women in trades. Despite massive inroads being made to recruit more women into skilled trades in construction, the work needed to improve the culture in construction needs to be at the forefront of all of this. On Thursday night we networked and celebrated apprentices enrolled at Canberra Institute of Technology and listened to them about what they needed and wanted. It’s so vital we get this right. That we give these women voices and space to be heard and seen. A huge thanks to our supporters who helped us put together the goodie bags, which included important information from The Fair Work Ombudsman on apprentices entitlements and rights. As one apprentice stated “stop asking about my feelings and start giving me the information I need to make good choices” The problem is, too many people who aren’t tradeswomen are taking up space and talking about things they have no firsthand knowledge of. This is wrong. Elevate the voices of the next generation and we will be able get this right. And getting it right for them now, and the future generations is absolutely paramount if we we want to see the change we all keep talking about. Thanks to Milwaukee Tool Australia & New Zealand Tool Kit Depot Bunnings Corinthian Doors Australia The Umbrella Collective Techtronic Industries Australia New Zealand Consumer/Commercial for your continued and unwavering support. Thanks to she wear australia for the donation of a $239 voucher. Thanks to Milwaukee Tool Australia & New Zealand for donating a two piece kit (nothing is better than free tools!) Thanks to Zonta Club of Canberra for sponsoring 3 x $500 scholarships. But the biggest thanks goes to the apprentices for showing up, being themselves and being courageous and bold in reshaping male dominated industries every single day. #buildlikeagirl #ladytradies #femaleapprentices

It’s #nationalskillsweek ! We are shining the light on the need to attract more diverse people to trade apprenticeships and skilled rolls in the construction industry. Australia continues to experience an increase in demand for skilled labour, which requires increased workforce participation, increased skill attainment and the employment of attraction and retention strategies. A large part of addressing this issue is providing ample education and information about the career and training possibilities and opportunities that are available to all Australians. National Skills Week aims to raise the awareness of the diversity of training and career opportunities available, pathways into training and education, and the importance of trades, skills and VET to today’s society. We have decided to give a little gift to 50 of our female apprentices studying at Canberra Institute of Technology to let them know we are right there alongside them. And who doesn’t love a goodie bag right? ;) A big thanks to our supporters Bunnings Tool Kit Depot Corinthian Doors Australia Zonta Club of Canberra she wear australia #buildlikeagirl #ladytradies #femaletradies #apprentices #diversity #inclusion #vetskills #vettraining #womensupportingwomen #changethetwopercent
