P2GreeN aims to develop and demonstrate viable and sustainable approaches to nutrient recovery from sanitary waste.
Info
Turning human sanitary waste into fertilizer A consortium of 32 partner organisations from 12 European countries and Switzerland aiming to “close the gap between fork and farm for circular nutrient flows” short P2GreeN, signed the Grant Agreement for a four-year Horizon Europe Project, started on the first of December 2022. The project is coordinated by agrathaer GmbH and Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) e.V. P2GreeN’s overall objective is to foster a circular material flow system between urban and rural areas thereby restoring the coupling of the water-agri-food system following the 3R principle “Reduce, Reuse, Recover”. To achieve this, P2GreeN will develop new solutions for the circular economy to halt and eliminate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution by connecting blue urban with green rural infrastructure, focussing on circular nutrient flows of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), two important plant nutrients and at the same time water polluters. This objective will be achieved through the implementation and exploration of innovative N and P recovery solutions for the utilization of human sanitary waste from urban settlements and its conversion into safe bio-based fertilizers for agricultural production in three pilot regions. Nitrogen and P are important plant nutrients and pollutants of surface and groundwater at the same time. The intensive use of fertilizers in agricultural production is a major factor for N and P pollution. Apart from that, mainstream fertilizer production methods are not sustainable. Additionally, high nutrient concentrations are also found in human sanitary waste streams from where they are ultimately released to rivers and coastal zones. Nutrient removal from wastewater is very energy intensive and hardly manageable. The use of sewage sludge for fertilization, however, is connected to problems such as micro pollutants. In consequence, new solutions are required. The three P2GreeN pilot regions are based in

🌱𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬🌱 Last week, the TROPS team with Guillermo Moreno Ortega and Lucas Sánchez Requena, conducted leaf sampling for foliar analysis in the avocado and mango crops of the Spanish pilot of 𝐏𝟐𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧. This analysis is crucial for our trial, as it will provide valuable insights into the nutritional status of the plants. This not only helps us evaluate the performance of the different treatments we are testing but also enables us to fine-tune and optimise fertilisation for the next season, aligning with more efficient and sustainable practices. 🌍 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞! 🌱 Our latest 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 for the P2GreeN project just dropped! 🎉 We're guiding policymakers across the European Commission to drive the agri-food sector's transition from linear resource use to circular, clean tech value chains. This shift will help reduce Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) emissions, all while bolstering European food security. 🌾 By reusing and converting N and P into safe bio-based fertilisers, we're working to cut down dependency on mineral fertilisers, creating a cleaner, more resilient Europe. 💪💚 Achieving these ambitious goals is only possible with strong support from policymakers who can drive the shift towards sustainable, circular practices in the agri-food sector. 🌱💼 Together, let’s build a more sustainable agri-food system! 🌱 Promoting Sustainability through Global Collaboration! 🌱 Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of final-year Agronomy students from Universidad Autónoma de Chapingo (Mexico) at our Axarquía living lab. This visit was an incredible opportunity to showcase the work of our P2Green project and our Spanish pilot site goals! Our colleagues, Pilar Zapata Aranda and Álvaro García from BIOAZUL, together with Guillermo M. from TROPS, led an insightful session on the challenges we face in promoting sustainable agriculture. They shared our innovative approach in: 🌿 Using reclaimed water for subtropical crops 🌿 Maximizing nutrient recovery and management 🌿 Embracing circular economy practices The visit fostered a rich exchange of ideas on nutrient cycles and water management, key aspects for sustainable food systems. We’re inspired by the global interest in reclaiming resources and tackling environmental challenges together! 🌍💧 #P2Green #SustainableAgriculture #CircularEconomy #ReclaimedWater #SpanishPilotRegion
