The peak wildfire season in Scotland is typically between March and May when accumulations of dead and dried-out vegetation provide a fuel source to help flames to spread. However, an unusual set of weather conditions combined to spark the recent late-January blaze at Assynt near Lochinver in Sutherland; ✔️Linked to the jet stream track, a key driver of UK weather, 2023/24’s named Atlantic storms are just one name away from equalling 2015/2016’s number of named storms since storm naming was introduced in 2015. Associated with this stormy pattern and where the region was also subject to a yellow warning for wind, winds gusting between 60-70mph brought down a power line which set fire to vegetation. ✔️ However, the unusual timing of the fire was also coincident with an unseasonably warm temperature, with the Met Office having provisionally confirmed a new UK January maximum temperature record of 19.6C in nearby Kinlochewe on 28 January. #wildfires #atlantic #storms #temperature

🌎Over the last few months, we have developed a new Earth System Model by joining together cutting edge models of the atmosphere, land surface, ocean, waves, and sea ice. 🌊The animation shows results from a test simulation at an atmospheric model resolution of 24 km that makes a weather forecast from initial conditions on 25 October 2023 and runs for 10 days. Low level wind speed traces out storms and fronts across the globe. Look for the concentrated cores of strong winds around Hurricane Otis near the West Coast of Mexico at the beginning of the forecast and Hurricane Tammy off the East Coast of North America in the middle of the forecast. 🌪️🌩️A typhoon forecast to form off the east coast of the Philippines did not actually form; such a storm is colloquially known as a “cyberstorm” and is not unusual in model forecasts beyond 6-7 days. The model also forecasts a storm that puts an area of stronger winds between the UK and France, an early hint of Storm Ciarán that caused significant damage and deaths in parts of Europe in early November. #earthsystemmodel #climateanalysis

⭐Great news! 🌿 Defra has officially confirmed that Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) for major developments is launched today. 🌳It's a significant step towards ensuring that wildlife habitats thrive even amidst development. For the first time, all habitats, regardless of their significance, will be acknowledged in the planning system for their invaluable contribution to nature and people. 🌍Moreover, we're excited to share that we have developed robust solutions to map and calculate BNG effectively. Let's continue our journey towards environmental conservation and celebrate this milestone for biodiversity! #BiodiversityNetGain #EnvironmentalConservation
