Sixteen European research institutes are joining forces with climate risk practitioners to better assess and predict the influence of climate change on extreme weather using novel artificial intelligence methods. This new EU-funded 4-year project, called “XAIDA”, started in September 2021. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101003469.

Data released today by Copernicus ECMWF shows that: 🌡️ It is now virtually certain that 2024 will be the warmest year on record. it is also virtually certain that the annual temperature for 2024 from ERA5 will be more than 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level, and likely that it will be more than 1.55°C above. 📈 October 2024 was the second-warmest October globally, after October 2023 and 1.65°C above the pre-industrial level 🌡️ The year-to-date (January–October 2024) global-average temperature anomaly is 0.71°C above the 1991-2020 average, which is the highest on record for this period and 0.16°C warmer than the same period in 2023 ⏰ This marks a new milestone in global temperature records and should serve as a catalyst to raise ambition for the upcoming Climate Change Conference, #COP29 #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis

🆕Paper | Formally combining different lines of evidence in extreme-event attribution "Event attribution methods are increasingly routinely used to assess the role of #climatechange in individual weather events. In order to draw robust conclusions about whether changes observed in the real world can be attributed to anthropogenic climate change, it is necessary to analyse trends in observations alongside those in climate models, where the factors driving changes in weather patterns are known. Here we present a quantitative statistical synthesis method, developed over 8 years of conducting rapid probabilistic event attribution studies, to combine quantitative attribution results from multi-model ensembles and other, qualitative, lines of evidence in a single framework to draw quantitative conclusions about the overarching role of human-induced climate change in individual weather events." 📰ASCMO (Copernicus.org) 👏Otto FEL, Clair Barnes, Sjoukje Philip, Sarah Kew, van Oldenborgh GL, Robert Vautard 🔎https://lnkd.in/ebmBmjN8 #attributionscience #climatescience #extremeweatherevents Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment Imperial College London KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute IPSL-Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement
