Om oss
european weather Extremes: DrIvers, Predictability and Impacts (EDIPI) is an international consortium of universities, research centres and private companies aiming to further the holistic understanding of temperature, precipitation (incl. drought) and surface wind extremes over Europe. One of EDIPI’s key goals is to train a cohort of Weather Extreme Experts, who combine a physical understanding of high-impact weather extremes with a practical knowledge of predictability tools and an appreciation of user-relevant information required by the private sector. In order to achieve this goal, EDIPI offers 14 Ph. D. positions in 8 different countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Israel, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U. K.), with a start in September 2021. The project brings together nine beneficiaries spread across eight countries which will hire the students and 11 partner organizations spread across seven countries which will train and host the students for their research secondments. EDIPI is funded under the European Commission’s H2020-MSCA-ITN programme.

🎉 Congratulations, Dr. Jamie Mathews! 🎉 Jamie Mathews has successfully defended his PhD thesis, titled: "Oceanic Maintenance of Atmospheric Blocking in Wintertime in the North Atlantic." Jamie’s work has shed new light on the intricate interactions between atmospheric blocking and oceanic processes, focusing on the pivotal role of air-sea interactions over the Gulf Stream. His research contributes to our understanding of extreme weather dynamics, an essential area in the face of climate challenges. A heartfelt congratulations to Jamie on this incredible achievement! Your hard work and dedication inspire us all. 🌍🎓 #PhDDefense #ClimateScience #OceanAtmosphereInteraction #EDIPI #Success

🌍 Check out my new research article – It is the first continental-wide climate health impact attribution study covering 35 European countries. Together with Dominik Schumacher Hicham Achebak Ana M. Vicedo Cabrera Sonia I. Seneviratne Joan Ballester 🔍 Key Findings: We found that every second heat-related death could have been avoided in the absence of climate change. - More than 38,000 deaths attributed to climate change during the 2022 summer - Women and the elderly are most affected - In Southern Europe, the risk of dying from heat caused by climate change is twice as high as in other parts of Europe 💡 Takeaways: - Many people still believe climate change is a distant threat, yet our findings underscore that it already affects health outcomes across the entire continent - Not everyone is equally affected, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies to protect vulnerable groups - We must accelerate mitigation efforts to limit global warming to prevent the worsening of climate-related health risks - Many vulnerable regions around the world remain underrepresented due to a lack of available data #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #Research #Adaptation #HealthPolicy #european weather Extremes: DrIvers, Predictability and Impacts (EDIPI) Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) https://lnkd.in/gw9iHY8f

🌍🎨 New post from Project EArtH: Drought 🌍🎨 🖼️ What would Van Gogh’s Wheatfield or Moran’s Yellowstone look like in 2100 if we fail to address climate change? Explore the artistic reinterpretation and the science behind it in our latest post! We have just released our second post in the EDIPI Art Hazard project, where we merge art and science to reimagine iconic paintings under future climate scenarios. This time, we’re focusing on drought and its impact on landscapes and ecosystems. Read the blog post: https://lnkd.in/dxsMc4wR #ClimateAction #ArtAndScience #EDIPI #ProjectEArtH
