Did you know that we designed the landmark bridge that forms the backdrop to the popular TV show Derry Girls? 🌉 On 18 July 1933, the Craigavon Bridge in Derry/Londonderry was officially opened in front an audience of over 20,000 spectators and declared a gift to the people of the city. The bridge designer David Anderson of our predecessor company Mott, Hay & Anderson participated in the opening ceremony of the unique 390m long, double deck, steel truss crossing that was delivered in collaboration with contractor, Dorman, Long & Co. As one of the most iconic projects we've helped to deliver, our work on Craigavon Bridge laid the foundation for over 70 years of engineering innovation on the island. Today, we’re applying technical expertise to help lay strong foundations for growth, maintain and improve essential infrastructure, and guide the transition to a low carbon energy future. Reflecting on our first-ever #CarbonCrunch in the Middle East 🗺️ Middle East organisations face tougher local #climate legislation as countries respond to international commitments and frameworks. From May 2025, the UAE’s Federal Decree-Law on the Reduction of #ClimateChange Effects will require entities covered by the regulation to measure and report emissions or face a penalty. At our inaugural Carbon Crunch event in the #MiddleEast in November, we brought together senior leaders from across the built environment, infrastructure, water and energy sectors to discuss practical steps towards #decarbonisation. It was a brilliant opportunity to share knowledge on how to overcome common technical, strategic, financial and cultural barriers to change. In a recent article by Construction Management magazine, Eszter A Gulacsy, technical director, explains how smart sensors can improve the #operation and #functionality of new and existing buildings. In the past, it has often been difficult to obtain building performance data, but the installation of smart sensors can unlock that. That’s why the #DigitalSolutions enabled by smart sensors are increasingly seen as an essential tool for building owners and operators. Eszter explains the types of data that can be extracted from smart sensors to improve a building’s energy performance, as well as improving the wellbeing of people using the spaces. For example, air-quality sensors are increasingly common in schools, healthcare settings and offices for CO2 monitoring as increased concentrations can lead to cognitive impairment. As research shows that even at the top end of ‘good’ air quality at 1,000ppm concentration of CO2, there is a 15% drop in cognitive functions, while at 1,400ppm the drop is as much as 50%. Eszter also discusses the potential of future space planning by using smart sensors and what building owners and operators need to do to use this data to its fullest potential. We’re excited to be supporting Transport for New South Wales in their upgrade of the Princes Highway in a joint venture with RPS and BG&E. We’ve been awarded the contract for the concept design and environmental assessment of the Princes Highway upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road. This project will support regional growth, connect communities and provide safer and more reliable travel. As part of our joint venture, we will be exploring the project's impacts on the surrounding area and proposed mitigation measures for those impacts, such as flora and fauna, noise and vibration and First Nations heritage. The projected pace and scale of growth in Australian defence spending is significant, and stakes are high to manage the ramp up. How can the industry respond to this rapid surge without escalating costs, causing project delays or compromising on scope? Peter Colacino, our project strategy and delivery leader for NSW, shared his insights in the recent Australian British Chamber of Commerce Defence x Infrastructure magazine. In his article, Peter explores the comparison that can be made to surges in civil infrastructure spending in Australia where tight timeframes and fixed funding has seen contractors motivated to reduce scope in order to deliver projects on time and on budget. Alternative solutions such as collaborative contracting and private investment could be the key to mitigating these risks and managing the growth in defence. 🏆Our team recently took home Bentley Systems 2024 Going Digital Award in the enterprise engineering category for our work on Metrolinx's Ontario Line, a nearly 16-kilometer subway through downtown Toronto.
