As the holiday season shifts into full gear, the I-95 span over the Rappahannock River, notoriously known for congestion, is set to become even busier. Many rely on this highway for travel between Richmond, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Previous attempts to renovate the crossing and reduce traffic bottlenecks were unsuccessful. Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) was contracted to deliver six miles of new southbound lanes and four bridges. The design included complex plans to maintain traffic during construction and was subject to strict environmental requirements. They used Bentley software to model the existing highway and propose design and construction plans to widen the road. Advanced modeling and simulation features helped JMT assess traffic management and the sustainability of the designs. The team Identified and resolved issues early on to save time and resources, as well as minimize community and environmental impact. Construction began in 2020 and was completed in 2024. #roads #bridges #3Dmodeling #geospatial #iTwin #OpenRoads #infrastructure #engineering

Cressbrook Dam is one of the three water storages used to supply Toowoomba and the surrounding communities in Queensland, Australia since 1983. It has a surface area of 517 hectares and a total capacity of over 81,000 mega-liters, providing safe drinking water to over 180,000 people. The Toowoomba Regional Council, working with engineering services firm GHD Group, focused on improving asset and management assessments for a dam safety upgrade, and also to help protect this popular recreational destination. Using Bentley and Seequent's 3D modeling and analysis software, GHD converted historical information into a single digital data source. Combining geological and geotechnical data they created a 3D reality mesh used to create a digital model of the dam site. This model enabled the project team to assess the dam foundations, geological elements, and potential risks. Ultimately this work helps ensure the safety and reliability of Cressbrook Dam for decades to come. 💧✨ 📰 Read more about how GHD used historical data, a drone, and a digital twin to help inform the dam's future in this Seequent blog: https://bit.ly/3BslhOE #digitaltwin #photogrammetry #realitymodeling #3Dmodeling #geology #iTwinCapture #Leapfrog

Home to about 6 million people, who love to bike, walk, and use public transport, Denmark is a small country with a big vision. The country is working to improve and provide better road infrastructure, with a focus on long-distance travel and freight. The Danish Road Directorate (DRD) manages the national road network in Denmark, which covers almost 4,000 kilometers of expressways, main roads, and bridges of which 1,249 kilometers are motorways. The DRD's mission? To make sure the roads are safe, efficient, and sustainable for the Danish community. Their Infrastructure Plan 2035 aims to invest 161 billion DKK (about 21.6 billion EUR) in improving the country's transport infrastructure. To help ensure things run efficiently, DRD uses 4D digital construction management to plan, design, monitor, and deliver large infrastructure projects. This tech-savvy approach enables them to simulate and optimize every aspect of the road construction process. [Images: Aerial view of Copenhagen, Denmark. Earlier this month, approximately 190,000 fans entered the Yas Marina Circuit over the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. 🏎️🏁 Home to the FIA Formula 1 World Championship seasonal finale, the circuit began track modifications in 2020 to provide a more entertaining race environment. The changes were completed in time for the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Driven International, working with Mrk1 Consulting, designed the modifications using Bentley software amid challenges working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet the tight, non-negotiable timeline. To integrate the changes with existing facilities and communicate among a remote multidiscipline team, Driven International sought a collaborative digital solution to review and modify design plans quickly. They created a digital twin to run track simulations. Working in an open environment streamlined workflows and facilitated accurate material quantity extractions, reducing materials by 10% to 15% and saving hundreds of thousands of pounds. Using Bentley applications produced a millimeter-accurate design to pinpoint bumps in the surface, saving truck movements and asphalt, and reducing the project’s carbon footprint. This update set the Yas Marina Circuit up to continue hosting future events successfully. #engineering #digitaltwin #roads

The Uttar Pradesh Tube Well project aims to provide safe drinking water to 6.8 million rural residents through 1.7 million household connections. India's most populated state, Uttar Pradesh faces significant water scarcity challenges. This issue is exacerbated by low precipitation levels and arid climatic conditions. With a population of over 241 million residents, the state has taken steps to improve access to clean water, especially in rural areas where residents rely on uncertain or remote water sources. This project includes designing and constructing over 3,000 overhead tanks in rural villages. L&T Construction used an integrated BIM, structural, and hydraulic modeling solution to design, evaluate, and determine an optimal construction method. L&T Construction optimized the distribution network design using Bentley software and chose precast construction for better quality control and risk management. Digital modeling and analysis streamlined workflows for 600 design variants, cutting construction time by 90%. This method also lowered material waste and energy consumption, reducing the environmental footprint and setting a standard for future rural infrastructure projects. The Uttar Pradesh Tube Well project was recognized as a 2024 Going Digital Awards finalist. #water #waterdistribution #waterscarcity #cleanwater #infrastructure #engineering #construction
