UN-Habitat is the United Nations agency working for a better urban future.
نبذة عنا
Lebanon is a nation of cities and almost 90% urban by population. UN-Habitat works to support the urban development of the country within the agency’s mandate of promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities – at both national and local levels. UN-Habitat Lebanon supports local and national authorities in urban data gathering and analysis, urban upgrading, climate change adaptation, housing rehabilitation, city planning, municipal governance, public spaces, mobility, policy, planning, basic services, housing, land and property rights and much more. As part of the agency’s advocacy efforts, UN-Habitat Lebanon in partnership with ESCWA held the First National Urban Forum of Lebanon in 2022 – placing cities at the centre of the future development discourse of the country – in addition to several other streams of work. Established in 2006, the UN-Habitat Lebanon Country Programme has also supported Lebanon’s response and recovery efforts to several crises, including the 2006 July War, the Syrian displacement crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beirut Port explosion and the ongoing protracted socio-economic crisis with the ultimate aim of setting Lebanon on a path towards sustainable urban development.

The recent conflict in Lebanon 🇱🇧 has left a vast impact on the country. At the onset of the escalation of recent hostilities, the BERYT project temporarily halted works on the ground, due to prevailing insecurities, an impacted workforce and inaccessibility of materials.🛠️🪚🧰 Despite the difficult circumstances, UN-Habitat quickly resumed its stabilization efforts to safeguard these Beiruti architectural landmarks.🏚️🏛️ The Beirut Housing Rehabilitation and Cultural and Creative Industries Recovery Project (BERYT), funded by the Lebanon Financing Facility administered by The World Bank aims to rehabilitate severely damaged residential buildings of heritage value and provide grants to creative and cultural actors in the areas most heavily affected by the Port of Beirut explosion. The project is led by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and the cultural and creative industries component is implemented by UNESCO Beirut Office. Since 2017, Zurich 🇨🇭 and Tyre 🇱🇧 have collaborated through a City-to-City partnership led by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Lebanon, contributing to the enhancement of local governance through moments of peace and crisis. This has included the establishment of the Tyre Regional Technical Office, which has been supporting local authorities in coordinating and managing the ongoing response to the unfolding humanitarian needs in South Lebanon through supporting internally displaced persons, coordination with other entities, data collection and assessment of collective shelter needs and socioeconomic needs of impacted individuals. 📝🏠🏢 Today, Tyre faces a stark reality. Once a bustling and resilient city, it now lies almost empty, with its people displaced and seeking safety across the country. Mayor Corine Mauch of Stadt Zürich extends her thoughts to Tyre’s community as we all hope for peace and stability in the region. 🕊

The Lebanese Civil Defence and Fire Brigades are on the front line in today’s Lebanon. Amidst daily aggressions and attacks, they continue to provide life-saving search and rescue services despite limited resources and deteriorating infrastructures. Since 2019, as part of UN-Habitat Lebanon’s Civil Defence and Fire Brigade Support Programme, the agency is empowering these brave actors to serve and defend their urban communities. UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) has implemented multiple interventions supporting Lebanese Civil Defence centres and Fire Brigades across the country in Greater Beirut, the Beqaa and Tripoli. With thanks to generous support from the Government of Japan, the Government of the Republic of Poland, the Government of the Republic of Korea, and the European Union, we aim to continue to empower cities to better respond to the prevailing urban crises. With generous support from the Government of the Republic of Poland in Beirut, UN-Habitat Lebanon is supporting the Disaster and Crisis Management Room at the Beirut Governorate, located at the Beirut Municipality with renewable energy to ensure the continuity of its services and actions, in responding to the urgent needs of the ongoing conflict and displaced communities. We have installed a 50 kWp on-grid solar system with a fuel save controller on the municipal building's rooftop. This system reduces fuel dependency, lowers energy costs, and ensures essential services continue, helping the city respond more effectively to those in need.
