Reflecting on Kenya's Climate Progress at ACS@ONE Thematic Convenings I had the privilege of attending the ACS@ONE: Civil Society Organisation (CSO)-led Deep Dive Reflections on Key Thematic Areas, marking one year since the inaugural Africa Climate Summit (ACS 2023). This gathering was a powerful moment to review the Nairobi Declaration outcomes and explore the next steps for a sustainable Africa. At ACS@ONE, we examined the progress Kenya has made across different thematic areas, starting with Theme 1: Climate Adaptation and Resilience on November 4th, 2024 driven by insightful and engaging sessions on sustainable agriculture food security and resilience; urban infrastructure , climate resilient cities and urban centers ; repositioning climate change adaptation knowledge sharing approaches ; drought resilient systems , drought vulnerabilities impact to peace and security. These sessions have not only highlighted the milestones achieved but also allowed for critical discussions on challenges faced and emerging opportunities. Excited to continue supporting meaningful change for a resilient, sustainable future. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🌱💪 Jacob's Ladder Africa PACJACI AGRA Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH #ACSAtONE #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Kenya #RoadToACSAtONE

Last month, our colleague Anastancia Vengayi Mangisi was at the Accelerating nature-based solutions conference, the world's largest land restoration programming conference taking place in Livingstone, Zambia. She was joined by colleagues from Alliance2015 partners. Nature-based solutions are a key component for communities to accelerate climate change adaptation and mitigation. This is also in line with WHH South Sudan strategic focus, anchored on climate resilience. Some of the takeaways from the conference that are especially relevant for South Sudan are: 🟢 the promotion of restorative agriculture, farmer-managed natural regeneration, assisted natural regeneration. 🟢 the importance of enhancing resilient and sustainable food systems. Thanks to the Global EverGreening Alliance, Government of Zambia, AFR100, African Natural Capital Alliance, FSD Africa, UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration for organising this pivotal event and bringing together change-makers and action-takers with a shared mission: #GreenUptoCoolDown the planet. #SouthSudan #ClimateResilience

While my focus has been on the Great Lakes, exploring inspiring projects worldwide has been eye-opening. One such project is the "Great Green Wall" in Africa's Sahel region, combating desertification by restoring vital habitats. The Sahel, a belt between the Sahara Desert and greener biomes, has lost 10% of its land to desertification in the past few decades. National governments and the World Food Program are taking action. The Great Green Wall implements indigenous agricultural practices at scale, and can start revitalizing soil and replenishing aquifers in just two seasons. Local communities are embracing self-sufficiency through productive agriculture. While not a panacea for climate change, these efforts signify the importance of sustainable solutions among the myriad challenges we face globally. It's exciting to witness these initiatives taking shape and contributing to a greener future. Learn more about the Great Green Wall and its impact: [Link to the article](https://lnkd.in/gvqRM5Dd)

🌊 Did You Know? The traditional Taya system on Tuti Island, Sudan, has safeguarded the community against floods for decades—using innovative early warning methods like drums, horns, and lookout tents. This heritage-based system even adapted to modern tools like mobile phones to protect lives during disasters! ‼️ Through ICCROM-FAR's Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action project, this system and its story have been documented and shared in a special issue of the Journal of Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainable Development. ‘It All Starts at Home!’ 🏚 was the topic of this year's World Urban Forum 12 Egypt in Cairo from 5 to 8 November, where our project Resilience Initiative Africa (#RIA) participated and shared valuable insights on #urbanrisks across the African continent: 💡 Knowledge Series on Urban Resilience in Africa: in partnership with African Union, UNDP, and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), RIA launched the #KnowledgeSeries on the resilience of African cities to climate risks and urban growth. Developed by United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), this series supports the AU #AfricaUrbanResilienceProgramme promoting #UrbanResilience across Africa. 💡 From Data to Integrated Support - Building Inclusive and Resilient Cities: RIA partner SDI. (Slum Dwellers International) shared valuable insights on collecting #data on people with disabilities for inclusive disaster risk management, further strengthening the resilience strategies of African cities. This important contribution was presented at the German Pavilion. As we continue to face rapid urbanisation, climate change, and social inequalities, there is an immense opportunity for collaboration, innovation, and action to create cities that are truly resilient - together, we build the #urbanfuture we want to see! #WorldUrbanForum #Resilience #SustainableCities #InclusiveDevelopment #ClimateAction #UrbanGrowth #DisabilityInclusion #DataBasedPlanning #GermanyAtWUF12 #Africa
