Where quantum technology becomes quantum solutions
About us
Quantum City is building an ecosystem for quantum science and technology in Alberta bringing together researchers and developers, industry and adopters of quantum technology and serves as the hub for all quantum solutions. The creation of Quantum City is the result of a strategic collaboration between the University of Calgary, the Government of Alberta and Mphasis, which is Quantum City’s first industry partner. Quantum City’s mandate is to establish quantum-focused fabrication infrastructure, create pipelines for quantum and quantum-adjacent talent and expertise, and bridge the gap between quantum technologies and solutions to drive the development of a vibrant economic and scientific hub based in Calgary. These combined assets will create a unique, and once-in-a-generation opportunity to position Alberta as a national and international jurisdiction in the new quantum economy.

Sharing Alexander Varga's inspiring post that highlights achievements from the last semester, including a 2nd place win at the QAI Ventures GenQ Hackathon and a winning project at the Q2B24 Silicon Valley IBM Quantum Hackathon! Here’s to even greater quantum exploration in 2025, the International Year of Quantum! Adam Bene Watts Julien-Pierre Houle Jessica Oddan
Reflecting on the Last Four Months of My Quantum Journey As someone new to sharing updates here on LinkedIn, I felt it was time to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve had over the past semester in the quantum space. It all started with the opportunity to attend qConnect 2024, where I gained deeper insights into the quantum ecosystem and had the privilege of meeting inspiring individuals. Among them were James Sanders and Thomas Landis, who introduced me to the 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗤 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻 hosted by QAI Ventures. During this intense 48-hour hackathon, I collaborated with an incredible team—Julien-Pierre Houle, Pradeep Kumar, José Lesteiro Tejeda, and vikrant kumar—to tackle the Responsible Investments Challenge. We developed a portfolio optimization application using QAOA algorithms to explore quantum advantage in investment strategies. I’m thrilled to share that our team secured a 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and earned 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸! Since then, I’ve been focused on broadening my knowledge through my academic pursuits. A special shoutout to Shahpoor Moradi, PhD and Tim Andrew, PhD for their guidance in helping me explore the applications of quantum computing in both technology and business. After wrapping up the semester, I had the honor of participating in the 𝗤𝟮𝗕𝟮𝟰 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗕𝗠 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻. Teaming up with Joy H. and Khouloud Alkhammassi, we worked on developing Quantum Search on a Semantic Hilbert Spaces using Grover’s Algorithm. After a challenging (and sleepless) night of problem-solving, we were ecstatic to be named one of the 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀! A huge thank you to Jannes Stubbemann and Luke Govia for their invaluable support and guidance throughout the event. A final thank you to Jean-Baptiste Faverjon for inviting me to participate—it was an incredible experience! The last semester has been an incredible journey filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. I’m excited to continue exploring the quantum frontier in 2025, the International Year of Quantum!
