Today we honour fallen member Detective Boyd Davidson. On Dec. 20, 1974, Det. Davidson responded to a call from a concerned storekeeper who reported that a customer had become abusive, after being refused glue, suspecting the customer intended to use it as an intoxicant. The suspect fled from the police & hid in his garage at home. When officers arrived at the residence, they were met with gunfire. Det. Davidson, 43, was fatally wounded, while 6 other officers were injured but survived. At the time of his death, Det. Davidson was a 23-year member of the Service, who had been instrumental in the creation of the combined police & fire arson squad. He was survived by his wife & 5 children. Det. Davidson made the ultimate sacrifice for his profession. The life of a police officer can be ended at a moment’s notice. Their loss shall be forever remembered.

With the cold weather upon us, District 8 members Const. Messenger and Const. Sanford are leading an initiative in partnership with Shawnessy Value Village to help reduce theft and support unhoused and vulnerable Calgarians. Recently, the constables noticed an increase in reports of theft of warm clothing, so they came up with an idea for patrol officers to distribute these essential items to community members in need. They pitched their idea to the thrift store's management, who kindly agreed to donate items throughout the season. Now, officers heading out on patrol are encouraged to take some of these essential items with them and provide them to those in need, helping to reduce theft and make a difference in the lives of community members they interact with during their shifts.

Welcome home, Const. Julie Helferty! Const. Helferty / Maj. Helferty has served her community for 14 years as a police officer and her country for 16 years as a reservist with the Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes (CAF). Last week, she returned from her May 2024 CAF deployment overseas, where she served as the Officer Commanding Technical Services in the Operational Support Hub - Middle East (OSH-ME). While deployed, Maj. Helferty co-ordinated regional supply, contracting and movement logistics support, enabling the task force to advance stability and security in the Middle East. Upon her return, Const. Helferty was greeted at the Calgary International Airport by her partner and colleagues from CPS’ internal military community. Members of our military community make excellent police officers. The core skills and abilities developed in the military, such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, initiative, problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure, directly correlate to a career as a police officer with the CPS. The CPS' Armed Forces Leave Policy allows for leave to be granted to reservists so they can balance their life of service to our community and our country. You’ve proudly served our country. Come serve our community with us. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gM7GRmx3
