  • As Kesikewiku’s (December) comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a month of celebration, learning, and community at the UEC. Here are some of the highlights: 🖐 Prosthetic Hand Workshop @ Rocky Lake Junior High: We’ve updated our curriculum to include sinew—highlighting its strength, traditional uses, and importance. Special shoutout to Treena Osmond for this great idea! 🤖 Math with Dash @ Pictou Landing First Nation School: Our STEAM team brought interactive math and coding fun to students from pre-primary to grade four, blending robots with numeracy and problem-solving! 🌊 Cultural lesson with Chief Mise’l Joe: We heard inspiring stories about Ulnooweg’s beginnings, canoeing across the ocean in birch canoes, and navigating through fog guided by Mi’kmaw songs. ✨ Dreamers Gala: We celebrated the work at Asitu'lɨsk to heal the hemlocks and support land-based learning. Guests enjoyed performances by Alan Syliboy & the Thundermakers, Samaqani Cocaqh, and a meal inspired by Mi’kma’ki’s flavours. Together, we honoured community, culture, and conservation. 🍴 Lunch & Learn at Dal Engineering: Daisy, our Pathways to Engineering Program Coordinator, shared insights from AISES & Indspire Conferences about engaging Indigenous youth in STEM learning. 🎯 GroBots completed! Our team celebrated the completion of Canadian Space Agency GroBot contracts with a well-deserved team axe-throwing party. 🎄 Holiday Potluck: We wrapped up the year with a festive potluck to share laughs, gratitude, and good food before the holiday break. What were your Kesikewiku’s highlights? #MonthlyRecap

  • Happy Kesikewiku’s! 🌕❄️ Kesikewiku’s (also called Kjiku’s) translates to “Winter Moon” or “Chief Moon” in the Mi’kmaw calendar, marking the arrival of the colder months. Mi’kmaw timekeeping is deeply tied to the land, with the Moons serving as guides for the seasons and ecological events. Elders also share that a 13th Moon was occasionally added to realign the cycle. What’s your favourite part of winter? ☃️ #MikmawCalendar #MikmawLanguageCulture
