Last week, the International CCS Knowledge Centre welcomed JERA Co., Inc., Japan's largest power producer, and the Government of Saskatchewan to tour Boundary Dam 3 (BD3) and PTRC’s Aquistore facility. With operations focused on natural gas and coal, JERA is actively searching for ways to reduce their emissions. The visit to BD3 offered a unique opportunity to witness a world-class carbon capture plant in action—showcasing how CCS technology can be used as a tool for achieving sustainable goals. A big thank you to Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership for coordinating this impactful visit and fostering global collaboration! 

We were thrilled to have our Senior Engineer, Luke A. Montague, P.Eng., present at the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association Infrastructure Summit & Trade Show today in Regina. Luke's session, Understanding the Deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), explored the basics of CCS technology, its role in reducing emissions, and how Canada is leading the way in this pivotal industry. On November 2, 2024, the Government of Alberta released the Draft Protocol for CO2 Capture and Permanent Geologic Sequestration (draft protocol) for public comment. The changes to the draft protocol represent the collaborative approach of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas to continually improve the functionality of Alberta’s Emission Offset System in regard to CCS development and deployment. We encourage all parties that may be impacted to provide feedback on the draft protocol. Last week, our President and CEO, James Fann, attended COP29 for the first time—and what an experience it was! James engaged in transformative discussions about the potential of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). From hard-to-abate sectors like steel and cement to power generation and oil & gas, CCUS continues to play a critical role in tackling industrial emissions. At our booth, he sparked curiosity and encouraged deep conversations—covering everything from CCUS fundamentals to global knowledge-sharing aimed at accelerating climate solutions. A key highlight was James’s participation in a panel moderated by Tim Dixon, General Manager of IEAGHG. The Knowledge Centre was delighted to host a recent tour of the Boundary Dam power plant in Estevan, Saskatchewan, home to the world’s first commercial-scale, coal-fired CCS facility. 🎉 Happy Anniversary, BD3! 🎉 As the International CCS Knowledge Centre, we take pride in our roots at SaskPower's Boundary Dam Unit 3 (BD3) – the world’s first commercial-scale, coal-fired power station with carbon capture and storage (CCS). Over the past 10 years, BD3 has captured 6.5 million tonnes of CO₂, setting a global standard for innovation in emissions reduction and CCS technology.   “SaskPower’s CCS facility has made Boundary Dam Unit 3 the cleanest-burning coal power unit on Earth and has turned Saskatchewan into an international expert for the development of CCS projects in a wide range of industries,” said Jeremy Harrison, the Minister Responsible for SaskPower.   This milestone is a testament to BD3’s success and an inspiration for future CCS projects across Canada and beyond. Congratulations to the dedicated people whose collaboration and hard work have made BD3 possible. 🌱 A Milestone in Carbon Removal! 🌱   Congratulations to Deep Sky on selling the first 10,000 tonnes of carbon removal credits from its Alberta direct air capture (DAC) demonstration centre to RBC and Microsoft— a groundbreaking achievement in Canada and the world! 🌎   Beginning as early as March, the site will test eight DAC technologies, with plans to capture up to 30,000 tonnes over 10 years. With two additional projects in Quebec in prefeasibility studies, this initiative highlights the power of collaboration and knowledge sharing to de-risk new technologies and scale climate solutions.   The Knowledge Centre is excited to see this innovative work unfold!
