A huge congratulations 👏 to all those who have contributed to this DCO application! This is a great milestone to celebrate, but also to pause, reflect 🤔 on lessons learnt and focus energy for the subsequent stages of this exciting and challenging project. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been identified as a key part of the UK’s ⚡ transition to a net zero economy by 2050, with the UK government aiming to capture and store 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030 and over 50 million tonnes per year by 2035. UK ports and terminals ⚓ will play a key role in exporting from CO2 emitters or transshipping as transport and storage clusters. We would like to congratulate our partners Cory on reaching the latest milestone towards securing planning permission to build their nationally significant Riverside carbon capture facility. We look forward to working with our other partners at Cory and Viking CCS to develop a solution to ship captured CO2 from Cory’s facility to our Port of Immingham, where it will be transported and stored within the Viking gas fields network in the southern North Sea. This project showcases the ability for CO2 shipping to connect dispersed emitters to transport and storage networks to share the economic and environmental benefits of CCS. It is a fantastic opportunity to lead the way in developing major port infrastructure projects for handling captured CO2, which will accelerate industrial decarbonisation. I think that says something about the human condition: we're good at ideas, less good at complex modelling and analysis.
