🌊 Framing Success: Guichon Creek Daylighting - A Commitment to Resilience and Restoration 🌊 When a sinkhole formed on the BCIT campus, it wasn’t just an infrastructure challenge - it was an opportunity for innovation. Located in an urban area, BCIT is underlain by Guichon Creek, which has been culverted underground for decades. The latest sinkhole, directly above the creek, prompted a bold response: replace the failing culvert with a daylit creek and fishway. BCIT assembled a multidisciplinary team, including KWL, McElhanney, PCL Construction, Hapa Collaborative, and B&B Contracting Group, to bring this vision to life. Leveraging years of experience with the Guichon Creek system and campus-wide Stormwater Drainage Strategy, KWL led the creek daylighting design, retrofitting an existing weir that had blocked fish passage for nearly 60 years. This innovative solution not only addressed the immediate infrastructure failure, but also demonstrated BCIT’s commitment to climate resilience. By integrating natural assets, the project improved flood capacity while enhancing the campus ecosystem. And the results? Fish have now been spotted above the weir for the first time in decades! We are proud to announce (and celebrate!) the elevation of Sarah Siegel and Chris McBride to the role of Principal, expanding the leadership of Hapa Collaborative! Sarah has been an integral part of Hapa for the past 13 years and a driving force behind some of the firms most impactful projects including Foot of Lonsdale and šxʷƛ̓ ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square. Her dedicated leadership, creativity, and thoughtful, forward-thinking design approach exemplify Hapa’s commitment to the creation of connected and livable communities. Sarah is currently working on the master plans for Port Moody's signature waterfront parks, Rocky Point Park and Old Orchard Park, as well as Vancouver's brand new Burrard Slopes Park. A 20+ year veteran of the design industry, Chris joined Hapa in 2021 and quickly made an impact, lending his design expertise and technical efficiency to the team. His elevation recognizes his leadership in rigorous design and construction processes, team mentorship, and dedication to growing Hapa’s studio culture. He is currently managing the design and delivery of the Gastown Public Space Plan and Tsawwassen Town Centre. “As Hapa Collaborative matures as a landscape architecture practice, we are excited to add two extremely capable designers to our leadership, each with complementary skill sets, and who demonstrate their experience and commitment to design excellence every day in support of our growing team of landscape architects and urban designers.” says Joe Fry, founding Principal. The Livable Deep Cove - Gallant Avenue Renewal Project in the District of North Vancouver was recently recognized by ITE Canada for nomination to ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals for an International Transportation Achievement Award in the #CompleteStreets category. It didn't end up picking up the hardware at the #ITEPhilly2024 conference this past week, but it was definitely a real honour to have the project recognized and considered at that level. Breaking ground on a project that’s years in the making never gets old. Earlier this month, the project partners for Menno Hall gathered on-site to celebrate a journey of innovation, collaboration, and commitment – and it’s just the beginning. Axiom Builders is proud to be the construction partner of PCDA and HyLand Properties, working hand-in-hand to bring their vision to life. When complete, Menno Hall will offer residents, students, and academics a holistically designed and beautifully landscaped facility to live, study, and build community in the heart of the University Endowment Lands. The British Columbia Institute of Technology Tall Timber Student Housing project in Burnaby, BC, will be topping out this week! 🎉 This 12-storey building showcases a shift forward in tall, hybrid, encapsulated mass timber construction, and is the first of the next generation of point-supported CLT structures. The pre-fabricated cladding was installed quickly, chasing two-stories below the active CLT floor install for the entirety of the project. This ensured the mass timber was enclosed quickly during construction, limiting exposure and drying of the wood.
