I recently came across a paper that was published in February 2024. The paper was aimed to study the effects of DME used as a solvent in conjunction with the conventional SAGD process right here in Alberta. The study compares conventional SAGD and ES-SAGD (Expanding Solvent Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage), using Propane, Butane and DME (Dimethyl Ether) Using DME as a solvent is not a new concept, SAGD operators and subsurface engineers have been studying this technology for several years. The literature continues to suggest that there is a huge potential to reduce the CI of a barrel of heavy oil, at lower costs. Key take aways from the study: - DME as solvent can increase recovery factor by 24% and 2x maximum oil rate compared to conventional SAGD - DME ES-SAGD can reduce the SOR by 80% and an 86% reduction in energy savings compared to conventional SAGD - DME has a higher solvent recovery rate than C3/C4 solvents. Conventional solvents are ~50% recovery rate whereas DME can be increased to 63%. One metric they use in the study is "solvent holdup ratio" (HBR). Conventional solvents have a HBR of 0.2, DME's HBR is 0.14, indicating a higher solvent efficiency for DME - The estimated carbon intensity of conventional SAGD is ~120 kgCO2/bbl, where propane and butane range from 50-160 kgCO2/bbl and 75-340 kgCO2/bbl, respectively. The CI for DME ES-SAGD ranges from 16-79 kgCO2/bbl. -Propane and Butane do not exhibit a clear economic advantage compared to conventional SAGD, however because DME ES-SAGD can be produced at lower costs, has high solvent efficiency and lower HBR, it results in a higher NPV compared to all other cases.
