Today, the Calgary Board of Education had the distinct honour of welcoming His Excellency Alfredo Martínez Serrano, Ambassador of Spain to Canada, along with Mr. Carlos Berrozpe Peralta, Education Attaché for Canada. The visit included tours of two of our Spanish Bilingual Program schools: Canyon Meadows Elementary and Senator Patrick Burns Middle School. It provided an opportunity to showcase how Spanish bilingual programs are seamlessly integrated into our classrooms, offering students a dynamic learning environment enriched by the Spanish language and culture. This visit celebrated the richness of Spanish heritage, highlighted the outstanding work of our schools with International Spanish Academy (ISA) status, and reinforced the strong educational and cultural ties between Alberta and Spain. At the CBE, we are proud to provide students with the tools and opportunities to connect with diverse languages and cultures. These programs not only prepare students for an interconnected world but also foster meaningful international relationships.

Today, the Calgary Board of Education hosted the second annual High School Student Well-Being Symposium — a full day dedicated to collaboration, student leadership and fostering a culture of well-being across the CBE. Students took centre stage, sharing their voices and ideas, and working together to develop actionable plans for their schools. This action included the creation of School Well-Being Action Teams, which will lead the charge in promoting mental health, resilience and connection in their school communities. Building on the success of last year, this year’s symposium once again showcased the creativity, passion and leadership of CBE students. Events like this remind us of the incredible potential of student-led initiatives to make a lasting impact. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped bring this inspiring day to life! #WeAreCBE #WellBeing #StudentLeadership #CultureOfWellBeing

Today, members of the Calgary Board of Education joined City of Calgary for Orange Shirt Day on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. At The Confluence, we gathered to remember the children lost to residential schools, honour the survivors and their families and commit to the ongoing journey of reconciliation. We were reminded of the lasting impacts of residential schools and our shared responsibility to foster healing, understanding and unity— not just as a public school district but as educators, staff and community members. Our system continues to learn, grow, understand, and honour Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing. #WeAreCBE #OrangeShirtDay #NDTR #EveryChildMatters #TruthandReconciliation

We’re excited to continue our partnership with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), along with our school board partners and industry supporters, to provide incredible learning opportunities for students. The new Exploring Skilled Trades program offers junior high students a fun, interactive way to dive into the world of skilled trades through an online platform. We were thrilled to join the launch celebration on Apprenticeship Day this week, where Minister of Advanced Education Rajan Sawhney, CBE students, and Trustees participated in hands-on "try-a-skill" activities and heard from a youth panel about their experiences. Since 2013, more than 1,350 CBE high school students have participated in dual-credit programs with SAIT, and many more have explored different career paths through hands-on learning experiences. #WeAreCBE #ABPSE #SkilledTrades #ABYouth
