We bring together nature, people & technology to manage waste holistically through resource recovery & circular economy

About us

Saahas Zero Waste is a socio-environmental enterprise with an overall experience of 10 years in the waste management sector. We believe in a circular economy where all waste is converted to resources. In this context, we leverage technology and data to provide a transparent view of the waste flow and the impact created through responsible waste management. We specialise in designing and executing customised solutions for the goal of zero waste to landfills, especially for bulk waste generators such as technology parks, residential complexes, educational institutions, hotels and others. In 2018, we were awarded the Swachh Best Practice Award by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as recognition of the work done in the space. In addition, we work with brands and producers to channelize plastic waste and e-waste for responsible processing under their extended producer responsibilities. In 2019, we diverted 10,000 MT of plastic waste from dumpsites and other open spaces under the extended producer responsibility program. To close the loop, we also offer products made from waste such as roofing sheets, clipboards, stationary, upcycled textile products, apparel and more. Our work supports livelihoods at the base of the pyramid and we consistently strive towards increasing the social impact of our work.

Updates

  • Within just a few months, we've seen encouraging results deploying CircularNet, an AI-powered computer vision model developed by Google to support the circular economy. Our pilot at the Anekal material recovery facility has already reached 85% accuracy in detecting high-quality plastic waste, boosting revenue potential by 10-12%. This AI model enables recycling and resource recovery by ensuring top-grade plastic waste is diverted for reuse. This benefits both recycling facilities and the environment, allowing the facilities to be more profitable while greatly reducing the amount of waste entering landfills. At Saahas Zero Waste, we’re committed to managing over 500 tonnes of waste daily by 2026, driving a circular waste economy in India. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey to resource recovery. https://lnkd.in/dVDwj_7B #SaahasZeroWaste #TechForGood #AI #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #WasteManagement #PlasticRecycling #Innovation #google

  • Bringing together theory and practice We are grateful to have this detailed case study which outlines a road map for educational institutions to practice holistic #wastemanagement within their campus. Today we have many private universities with huge campuses that are educating our youth. What happens to the waste generated within their campus? There is a tendency to shrug shoulders and believe that responsible waste management is a theory that is difficult to practice. The Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET ) case study stands out for the sincere efforts to walk the talk. With 15,000 students and faculty on campus daily, managing waste across 48 buildings, 16 hostels, and multiple kitchens was no small feat. By implementing waste segregation, composting, and aggregation systems, the focus is both on reducing waste and also on recovering resources. It has now been a year since we began the journey of collaboration where  the campus community has come together for this shared goal. This documentation we hope will trigger other institutions to join and embrace the system for responsible waste management. #educationalinstitutions #wastemanagement #impactdriven #resourcerecovery #communityswm #saahaszerowaste #education #learningswm #practicingswm #patiala #ThaparInstitute #TIET

  • The silver jubilee year At the turn of this century, our human species came together to redefine our relationship with the planet. The ensuing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set targets to mend and strengthen the relationship. In 2015, the MDGs made way for the more comprehensive SDGs. In 2025, as individuals, government, industry and communities we make every effort to change our behaviours and hold to account targets which will significantly impact the future of our #planet and #people. #newyear #impactdriven #newyearresolution #happynewyear #saahaszerowaste

  • Get together of the Year A year end get-together is a part of our SZW tradition. The team across geographies get-together to pause, reflect and let down barriers.  T for Team is an integral part of our (RIIIHT core values)*. A value that nudges each member of the team to contribute to finding solutions and making things better. As a new joinee, Ashwathi Kaimal, Manager, Expansions team experienced this event for the first time this year. This is what she had to say “I had the most wonderful time at the event! The games were fantastic—they helped me connect with people I usually don’t get a chance to interact with. I didn’t realize how quickly time flew. The food was delicious! I only wish the event had started earlier so we could have enjoyed even more time together." Here is a feedback from Nimmi Shankar, a key member of our leadership team for whom this was the fourth year, “We all look forward to the year end gathering to celebrate oneness. The energetic performance by our inhouse talents and the tasty food really added to the flavors of this years party!! The group games presented a great opportunity for everyone to interact, participate & enjoy the bonding”. *RIIIHT (Resilience, Integrity, Impact, Innovation, Humility, Team) #bengaluru #goa #delhi #team #workculture #employeengagement #yearendparty #2024

  • With fast fashion becoming rampant, approximately 7,800 kilo tonnes of textile waste gets generated annually in India - that's equal to the weight of 1.9 million adult elephants!! Doesn't this seem crazy? It's time we do something about it. It is of immense importance to consume consciously - buy only what you need, re-wear and reuse your clothes regularly, repair when needed and when the time comes, handle them safely. At Saahas Zero Waste, we are committed to bringing a change in the way textile waste is handled. Send us your textile waste and we will make sure to safely handle them - they may be reused by someone else, upcycled into functional products, recycled back into yarn or handled safely based on their condition. • Learning to be a 21st century leader- A SZW report card During our FY25 planning meeting at the start of the financial year, the leadership team had a clear ask. L for Learning was high on the list of priorities for the team. As we end the calendar year and with another quarter left to go for FY25, we have an interesting report card to share. This year, Saahas Zero Waste was a part of the Stanford Seed, Asia segment which is especially designed for emerging companies that are looking to pivot the business into a scale up mode. Wilma Rodrigues ,represented SZW as a part of C6 cohort which began in Jan 2024. The good thing about Stanford Seed is the format ensures that learning takes place across the length of the leadership team. Every member of our leadership team was given access to all the course material. There were also assignments that had to be completed by the different team leads. These assignments were then presented at a Transformation Studio (T-Studio) to a Business Transformation Advisor (BTA) from the Standford Seed team. The course content was challenging and rigorous. It included business development, sales and marketing, operations, finance and HR.  Says Shobha Raghavan, CEO Saahas Zero Waste, “our company is now 11 years old and we have good depth of knowledge of our sector and our business. The Seed programme however meticulously identified our gaps and gave us insights on how to address this." Our certificate of completion therefore is valued as a document that is a symbol of our efforts to lay the road for the scale up of our solutions. But for us, a purpose driven organization, learning is meant to be more than moving the needle on typical business-oriented metrics.  The 21st century leader must equally learn to align the scaling of a business with a new and much needed regenerative economy. So, we are very grateful to Ryan James who mentored us through a four-week (re)Biz programme. This is a leadership programme that integrates ecological integrity into a business. Re(biz) nudged us  to take a fresh look at capitalism and examine alternatives that can bring a shift in the system. A shift that will make us mindful of all the resources we extract from nature and look to give back more than we receive. We were introduced to degrowth, a system of transition that will look to rethink endless growth and instead allow us to move to an economy that will meet the needs of the planet and all people. Indeed, as leaders of SZW we are excited to take all our learnings (and unlearning) to the next level of integration within the organization. Watch this space as we will share some of our experiences through the New Year 2025.  #standfordseed #reBiz #learning #leadershipteam #saahaszerowaste

  • Every holiday season brings with it a temptation to buy more. But have you ever stopped to think about where those new clothes end up? Fast fashion has turned clothes into something we use once and forget, but the impact on the planet is hard to ignore. This Christmas, instead of buying new clothes, why not look at what’s already in your closet? Maybe there are some forgotten gems you can rediscover, or items you no longer need that could be passed on to someone else. Join us this Saturday for a fun swap event where you can bring in the clothes you don’t wear and exchange them for something new from our curated collection of pre-loved pieces. It's a simple way to refresh your wardrobe without contributing to the over-consumption cycle. Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Bring up to 5 items of gently-used clothing to swap, and drop off any additional un-swappable clothes to be repurposed or reused 2️⃣ Swap for items of similar value 3️⃣ Or simply shop thrifted gems from our curated collection without swapping Swap fee: Rs. 200 for up to 5 items of clothing 🗓️ Date: 21 Dec 2024 ⏰Time: 10 am - 5 pm 📍 Venue: Textile Recovery Facility, Gottigere #slowfashion #christmas2024 #preloved #zerowaste #circularfashion #SustainableLiving #PrelovedFashion #ecofriendlyfashion

  • Shaping a better future We are happy to win the iF Impact Prize for our mental health pilot for waste workers. iF Design Award is a globally recognized organization based in #Germany. They celebrate transformational work across multiple fields, including product design, service design and more. This year, we are happy to be recognized by iF Design for our efforts in addressing the urgent mental health needs of waste workers, a community often overlooked due to stigma and cultural barriers. Through this pilot, we aim to assess the prevalence of mental illness, raise awareness, and provide potential treatment/support options. The prize will fund a pilot at one SZW waste processing facility. This initiative marks an important step towards integrating mental health into waste management compliance and tackling the vulnerabilities faced by informal waste workers. We are happy to pioneer solutions that create safer, healthier, and more inclusive work environments for all. Thank you to iF Design for recognizing our efforts and commitment to innovation and human well-being.
