The silver jubilee year
At the turn of this century, our human species came together to redefine our relationship with the planet. The ensuing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set targets to mend and strengthen the relationship.
In 2015, the MDGs made way for the more comprehensive SDGs.
In 2025, as individuals, government, industry and communities we make every effort to change our behaviours and hold to account targets which will significantly impact the future of our #planet and #people.

I hope in 2025 many of us will take a hard look at ourselves. As humans are we capable of confronting the truth? If we are, then we will shift our behaviour and become conscious of our consumption, we will confront industry and we will work as a community to enforce regulations and hold our government to account.
I believe we are capable but there is tremendous hard work ahead.

Yesterday was the opening day of Our Ocean conference, and from the early breakfast event to the evening reception, such a rewarding opportunity to reconnect, make new connections, and collaborate with all stakeholders that care about the ocean. The conference location at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center literally immerses us in the seas, a constant inspiration for our work.
Among the highlights of my day was the warm welcome from H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, and the keynote addresses from prestigious speakers, underlining just how important the ocean is for humanity, culture and civilization.
We had an excellent start with the side event 'United for Ocean Action' breakfast hosted by a coalition of successful donors @BezosEarthFund @enduringearth @hacfornatureandpeople @OceanPanel Ocean Action 2030 Coalition, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy and @WWF
I was honoured to participate, together with distinguished panelists, in the 'Effective Management of Marine Protected Areas” session, a focus of our work at Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy. The target to reach 30% target of ocean protection by 2030, shouldn't minimise the benefits of quality versus quantity. I've encouraged ministers and decision makers to be ambitious in their plans and actions for a sustainable use of the ocean.
The discussions at the 'Our Deep Ocean, the growing momentum to halt Deep Sea Mining' side event were also important, and I am hopeful that many more countries will adopt a precautionary stance of a moratorium on deep sea mining, to protect this pristine marine environment.
Now I'm onboard for another full day dedicated to the ocean! 🌊🪸🐚

Biodiversity is the term for the different varieties of animals living on the planet. On this World Biodiversity Day, consider all the species you can see or have seen in your past, from a tiny ant to colorful plants and birds. You can mention the domestic animals and plants as well as the wild.

We only have one planet, there is no planet B. It‘s time to act like it. Ahead of #BiodiversityDay, let's recognise our collective responsibility to restore and protect the incredible diversity of life. Change starts with you. Together, let's build a better future. In today's modern age, human innovation has yielded substitutes or comparable alternatives for nearly everything. Yet, can we truly replicate or engineer another Earth? Over millennia, our planet has undergone a remarkable evolutionary journey, transforming into a habitable oasis. Are we content to stand by as human activities gradually chip away at the very fabric of our planet? Earth remains a singular cosmic marvel, fostering the harmonious coexistence of myriad life forms. It falls upon us, as evolved beings, to grasp the magnitude of this irreplaceable gift and fervently commit to its preservation. #EarthDay#worldearthday2024#earthday#planetvsplastics
June 8th is World Ocean Day 🌊
The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.
The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.
With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.
In Katapult Ocean we recognize that we're one piece of the puzzle. Despite #Geodiversity's vital role in sustaining life on Earth, it is often underappreciated, making #InternationalGeodiversityDay essential for raising awareness of its benefits to society and ecosystems, while highlighting the need for sustainable management of resources and the role of #geosciencecommunication in addressing global challenges.
In a short while, we will start the #IGD2024 Commemoration at UNESCO, discussing 'What is it and why does it matter'.
