About us

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) plays a crucial role in shaping and influencing education policy and research in the United States and around the world. Much of this work is carried out through NASEM’s Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE), whose activities and publications serve as invaluable resources and guidance for policymakers, educators, researchers, and those interested in advancing educational outcomes for all learners, in school settings and beyond.

  • 2024 was a year of incredible productivity for the National Academies Board on Science Education! Read this message from BOSE Board Director Heidi Schweingruber: This past year, and the BOSE 20th anniversary with it, have come to a close. I have been honored and humbled to connect with everyone in the BOSE network over these past months. What a wonderful celebration of the work we have done together and of the amazing ways that educators, researchers and decision-makers use work from BOSE to transform science and STEM education for the better. This has also been a year of incredible productivity for the board, with the release of 5 consensus study reports, a workshop proceedings, and numerous webinars and public meetings. As we look ahead to 2025, we are deepening our commitment to evidence-based guidance for science and STEM education and engagement, and to championing the amazing work of science and STEM educators everywhere. In the coming months, look for the launch of our Collaborative to Advance Science Learning and Teaching in K-12 Education, completion of a report on Computing and Data Science in K-12, convening of a convocation on informal science education, and the launch of a new study, Education for Thriving in a Changing Climate. Thank you for your support of BOSE and for all you do for science and STEM education.  This new year, please consider supporting the work of BOSE with a donation — your contribution can make a difference as we, together, chart a course for the future of science education. https://ow.ly/hL2Q50UAlMQ With gratitude, Heidi Schweingruber Director, Board on Science Education

  • Military learners must acquire diverse skills, from communication to using advanced technology, and retain those skills for use when necessary. Success in learning is directly linked with military innovation, operational success, and the success of our nation. Our new report assesses the multi-faceted and diverse military learning landscape and addresses the barriers military learners face. • Our current information ecosystem makes it easier for misinformation about science to spread and harder for people to figure out what is scientifically accurate—and proactive, multi-sector solutions are needed. The National Academies convened an expert committee to characterize the nature, scope, and impacts of misinformation about science, and provide guidance on interventions, policies, and future research. “Understanding and Addressing Misinformation About Science” offers a comprehensive view of what we know and don’t know about this problem. Misinformation is commonly perceived as a matter of bad actors maliciously misleading the public, but misinformation about science arises both intentionally and inadvertently and from a wide range of sources. • Open funding opportunity from NASEM Gulf Research Program! Up to $5M available to support projects that engage K-8 children and youth in place-based educational activities that foster the development of scientific and environmental skills, competencies, and capabilities that are critical to solving complex issues in the Gulf now and into the future. Proposals will be accepted from nonprofit, state, and local entities, excluding federal agencies, which support educational, service, and/or coordination activities for children and youth in the K-8 grade range. • Rural America offers a rich landscape for STEM learning, but the assets these communities offer and the students who live there are often overlooked. Ongoing efforts to expand access to high-quality K-12 STEM education and workforce development do not effectively reach rural schools. Addressing barriers, often related to funding, and promoting unrecognized assets for STEM learning can enhance the ability of people living in rural areas to further engage in and contribute to their communities or to broader scientific exploration and discovery. Our new report makes recommendations to federal, state, and local educational agencies, programs, and other relevant stakeholders to advance STEM education and workforce development for rural America. • The complex challenges facing society call for new ways of doing research. Momentum is building toward enabling and rewarding research enterprises that bring together researchers and those involved with policy, impacted communities, and industry. However, development of institutional capacities to support engaged research have not kept pace with the need. In June 2024, we held a workshop to bring together leaders and engaged research champions to explore areas for coordination and capacity building. Our new workshop proceedings summarizes the presentations and discussions at the workshop. Read now: https://ow.ly/FX1n50UnMjI #Research #Science #Policy

  • There are numerous challenges to providing high quality STEM education and workforce development in rural areas.  Recognizing these challenges, the National Academies was directed to undertake a consensus study through the CHIPS and Science Act to take stock of existing federal programs that support rural STEM education and workforce development and to develop recommendations for federal, state, and local action to improve it. On December 11, the National Academies will release "K-12 STEM Education and Workforce Development in Rural Areas." Please join members of the authoring committee for an overview of the report and a discussion of its conclusions and recommendations.
