On December 4-5, 2023, #NewVoices member Dr. Umut A. Gurkan (Cohort 2021-2023) co-organized the workshop “On Leading a Lab: Strengthening Scientific Leadership in Responsible Research.” The event addressed the evolving roles of research leaders, particularly those overseeing cross-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams. Participants engaged in discussions on challenges such as research integrity, data management, open science, mentorship, and technology. As an active lab leader, Dr. Gurkan brought a unique perspective to the workshop, contributing to meaningful conversations about the responsibilities of leading innovative science. The proceedings, which summarize the presentations and discussions, are now available. 📖 Read them here: https://ow.ly/2x4Z50Umuow #ScientificLeadership #ResearchIntegrity #NewVoices

It’s that wonderful time of the year when the 2024 US Nobel laureates gather in Washington, DC for a symposium at the house of Sweden, followed by a luncheon at the National Academy of Sciences. The symposium started with insightful remarks by National Academy of Sciences President Dr. Marcia McNutt, followed by a thought-provoking panel and discussion. This year’s Nobel prize winners were engaging, warm, and funny! The conversation about how science and technology can better serve the working class and undeserved communities in the U.S. and across the world was particularly timely. Grateful to the Swedish embassy and the National Academies for including our Mirzayan, New Voices NASEM and Frontiers alumni. Check out the recording of the symposium:

Recommended read! Check out this paper by #NewVoices members on how incorporating regional health care capacity changes our understanding of #ExtremeHeat vulnerability 👉 https://lnkd.in/eixHZ3d7
Extreme heat causes more death in the US than all other natural hazards combined. The 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 (with added help from my 𝗦𝗼𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗘 group), within the New Voices NASEM of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, wanted to take another look at vulnerability to heat waves. In this paper, we wanted to investigate how incorporating regional 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 changes our understanding of 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (EHE). 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰, 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 (HCEH), combines three indices – summertime extreme heat days, population older than 65 years, and county’s number of hospital beds per capita. The 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆. We are hoping this work can be used to set new policies to mitigate the impact of extreme heat across the US.
