There are numerous challenges to providing high quality STEM education and workforce development in rural areas. Recognizing these challenges, the National Academies was directed to undertake a consensus study through the CHIPS and Science Act to take stock of existing federal programs that support rural STEM education and workforce development and to develop recommendations for federal, state, and local action to improve it. On December 11, the National Academies will release "K-12 STEM Education and Workforce Development in Rural Areas." Please join members of the authoring committee for an overview of the report and a discussion of its conclusions and recommendations. Many valuable insights on rural education in this latest report from NASEM’s Board on Science Education.
Rural America offers a rich landscape for STEM learning, but the assets these communities offer and the students who live there are often overlooked. Ongoing efforts to expand access to high-quality K-12 STEM education and workforce development do not effectively reach rural schools. Addressing barriers, often related to funding, and promoting unrecognized assets for STEM learning can enhance the ability of people living in rural areas to further engage in and contribute to their communities or to broader scientific exploration and discovery. Our new report makes recommendations to federal, state, and local educational agencies, programs, and other relevant stakeholders to advance STEM education and workforce development for rural America. #STEM #K12 #WorkforceDevelopment "Last week, the Committee approved a $172 million cut to the National Science Foundation's Directorate for STEM Education. The Directorate works to foster a future-ready innovation workforce of scientists, technicians, engineers, mathematicians, and educators by improving STEM education for learners of all ages. This cut will significantly hamper our country's ability to stand toe-to-toe and compete with the scientific and technological prowess of other nations." https://lnkd.in/gPd6-iUw

Attending to STEM education in servingness at Hispanic‑serving institutions: a systematic review of more than a decade of scholarship Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) enroll over 60% of Latinx undergraduates and are key to diversifying STEM education. However, their support for STEM students is not well understood. Guided by Garcia et al.'s (2019) framework, we reviewed STEM education research in HSIs to enhance STEM education and servingness for Latinx students. https://bit.ly/3Ye6qAg #Hispanicservinginstitutions#STEM#education#scholarship#research#students#communitycolleges
