Average U.S. math scores on the latest Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study reverted to 1995 levels, according to data released Wednesday by the National Center for Education Statistics. That means “progress in prior years has been erased,” said NCES Commissioner Peggy Carr in a press briefing. The 2023 TIMSS math results are consistent with student performance on other recent assessments, including the 2022 math scores from The Nation’s Report Card and the Program for International Student Assessment, Carr said. How are you seeing schools address signs of ongoing declines in math performance? #math #TIMSS #curriculum

Some special education experts say the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act — signed by President George W. Bush 20 years ago today — was well designed, and they have no desire for another reauthorization anytime soon. However, they also said that underfunding and teacher shortages are making IDEA implementation challenging. In this deep dive, we take a look back to see how the 2004 reauthorization changed special education services — and a look ahead at ways some hope IDEA could be improved. #SpecialEducation #StudentsWithDisabilties #IDEA

Congratulations to K-12 Dive's Principal of the Year: Calvin Hooks from Hyde-Addison Elementary School in Washington, D.C. Hooks has helped the school make academic and attendance improvements and strong school-family connections, which he credits to a systemic approach to diversity, equity and inclusion and anti-racism practices. He and Hyde-Addison staff are working to ensure every student works to their highest potential and feels connected and welcomed at school. “As we build as a community, as we talk about the equity and anti-racism work, as we really learn more about the students and their families and really engage them at that level, that’s when we can hit on the achievement and growth aspect,” Hooks said. #Principals #SchoolLeadership #K12DiveAwards

Long-term special education teacher shortages, made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic, were the focus of a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights briefing. Panelists at the briefing offered various recommendations for easing the shortages, such as raising teacher salaries, increasing class sizes, reducing compliance tasks, offering more school choice, and investing in teacher career pipelines. The commission will issue a report on its recommendations for Congress and the president next year. #specialeducation #teachershortages #staffedup

If a proposed Biden administration rule is finalized as drafted, school districts with 1,000 or more students would be required to report to the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency within 72 hours of a disruptive cyber incident or within 24 hours of paying a ransom to cybercriminals. Some say the information will help bring attention and funding to support schools in combatting cyber crimes. But there are also questions about what counts as a cyber incident and how will the information collected be used. See this fourth installment of K-12 Dive's five-part series. #EducationExtortion #Ransomware #Cybersecurity
