Announcing the concept design for the new Mount Barker Hospital. “Grounded in community and the local landscape, the New Mount Barker Hospital will be a culturally sensitive and contemporary place of healing and respite,” says Leanne Guy, Hassell’s Health Sector Lead and Principal.
Located on Peramangk Country in South Australia, the new hospital will triple its inpatient capacity to 102 beds, enhancing services across maternity, paediatrics, rehabilitation, and mental health. It will also feature new operating theatres, recovery beds, chemotherapy, and renal dialysis services — ensuring comprehensive care for the whole community.
A collaboration between architecture firm Swanbury Penglase and Hassell, the project is designed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing Mount Barker and Adelaide Hills communities, expanding the capacity and capability of the Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network.
Community engagement is at the heart of this project, with the voices of key local groups —including the First Nations Community, Peramangk Peoples as Traditional Owners of Country, and the Adelaide Hills Palliative Care Group — informing every step of the design process.
Our approach also emphasises the preservation of the neighbouring Duck Flat community gardens and wetlands, promoting biodiversity and enhancing the wellbeing of patients and staff through a deep connection to nature.
