🤗 On Friday I had the absolute pleasure of meeting my mentor - Olayinka Wilson-Kofi - for the rest of the Cybergirl fellowship. 📌 Olayinka Wilson-Kofi is an accomplished Information Security and Privacy Specialist with over 15 years of experience in the tech industry. She currently serves at Ericsson, Middle East & Africa. She is also a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, serving as the President of the Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) West Africa Affiliate and an ISACA SheLeadsTech Ambassador. Our first mentorship call was nothing but inspiring and insightful. Here are some key takeaways: 🔐 Setting Expectations: Olayinka emphasized the importance of clearly outlining our expectations for the mentorship. This includes defining our career goals and areas of interest within cybersecurity. 📋 🔐 Journey and Experience: She shared her impressive career journey, highlighting the challenges she faced and the perseverance required to overcome them. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and continuous learning. 🌏 🔐 Challenges for Women in Tech: My mentor understands the unique challenges and discriminations women face in the tech space, assuring us of her support in navigating these hurdles and sharing her experiences and lessons learned. 👩💻 🔐 Investing in Ourselves: She encouraged us to invest in ourselves, continue learning, and join professional bodies to stay updated and connected. 📚 🔐 Building Confidence: A significant focus was on building our confidence, making informed decisions, and ensuring we enjoy the journey. 🎉 🔐 Networking and Collaboration: Olayinka emphasized the importance of networking and collaborating with others in the industry to foster growth and innovation. 🔐 Her Vision: She believes "The Top is big enough for everyone" and is committed to seeing us succeed and reach the pinnacle of our careers. 🚀 This week also marks Week 2 of our soft skills path, where we are developing essential skills to complement our technical knowledge. 🛠️ I am incredibly grateful for this mentorship opportunity and the support from my mentor. Breaking Barriers and Building Communities As the first in my family to venture into the tech industry, the journey hasn’t always been straightforward. From learning the ropes of software engineering to stepping into the dynamic world of cybersecurity, I’ve faced challenges, embraced growth, and found a sense of purpose. One of the most fulfilling parts of this path has been mentoring women in tech. It’s inspiring to help others navigate their own unique journeys, whether it’s finding their voice in the workplace or overcoming imposter syndrome. For me, tech is not just about innovation; it’s about community. The New Club, where I connect with incredible women engineers, and volunteering with RTC resume reviews are reminders of the power of collaboration and shared growth. If I’ve learned anything, it’s this: Success in tech isn’t just about breaking into the field—it’s about holding the door open for others. Five weeks ago, I embarked on a thrilling adventure into the world of cybersecurity, and today, as we commemorate International Girls in ICT Day with a focus on 'Leadership', I find myself marveling at the journey so far. In the short time since I've stepped foot into this fascinating field, I've been met with challenges, triumphs, and a profound sense of purpose. Each day has brought new lessons, new discoveries, and a growing excitement for what lies ahead. As a newcomer to cybersecurity, I've quickly learned that leadership isn't about having all the answers, it's about asking the right questions, listening intently, and embracing every opportunity to learn and grow. Despite my novice status, I'm eager to embrace the mantle of leadership, to chart my own course, and to inspire others to follow suit. Inspired by the incredible women who have blazed trails before me, I'm fueled by a burning desire to make a difference, not just for myself, but for the countless girls and young women who dream of a future in technology. I believe that by leading with courage, compassion, and conviction, we can create a world where every voice is heard, every dream is valued, and every opportunity is within reach. Today, as we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, I'm filled with gratitude for the chance to be part of this transformative journey. Though I may be new to the game, I'm ready to roll up my sleeves, to embrace the challenges, and to lead by example, one step at a time. In addition, I'd like to celebrate Confidence Staveley and CyberSafe Foundation for the opportunity to be part of CyberLearners Community. I'd also like to celebrate our mentor Nanbaan Pwaspo and our success advisor Victoria Robinson for walking with us since the beginning. I'd also like to celebrate my fellow #CyberLearners3.0 for believing in ourselves and going through this learning journey. So here's to the dreamers, the believers, and the fierce, fearless souls who dare to defy expectations and carve their own paths in technology. #KTL recently participated in the Fastrack into Information Technology (FIT) event in Dublin.This inspiring event held at the Green Isle Hotel aimed to encourage young females to explore exciting career opportunities in the tech industry. The event brought together over 1,000 enthusiastic students, including Transition Year, Youthreach, and PLC students, to connect with leading companies like TikTok, Microsoft, Bord na Móna, HSE, Shein, Irish Air Corps, Garda Cyber Security Unit, and more. Attendees had the chance to engage directly with these organisations, gaining insight into the dynamic world of technology. For #KTL, this marked another year of active involvement in the event, empowering the next generation of women in tech. Our team valued the opportunity to connect with young talents and share insights about the industries we work in. Chloe Healy, HR Generalist attended this event and provided these two key takeaways: “Events like this help to actively motivate and empower young females to consider careers in tech. 30 Portraits in 30 Days: Women in Technology — A passion project where I’m sharing a portrait I’ve taken of a woman in technology with an excerpt of her story. Day 7 of 30: “I majored in Informatics with a concentration in Cybersecurity. Before that, I was a Forensic Accounting major. Taking a Cybersecurity class for my major made me find my passion for Cybersecurity. After that, I joined an organization called ACM-W Student Chapter (Association of Computing Machinery - Women). Becoming the Vice President of the organization in my junior year allowed me to see the various opportunities and career paths in Cybersecurity. This also led me to a scholarship opportunity that sponsored me to attend the Grace Hopper Conference, where Nationwide recruited me. To inspire women in college, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, I strive to be a visible and accessible role model. I share my journey, including the challenges and successes, to show that success is possible regardless of background. Mentorship is key; I actively seek to mentor and support young women, offering guidance and encouragement.
