🔨 In 2019, a facility consisting of two pre-engineered metal buildings was completed in Irvine, Calif. One section is home to an Olympic-size rink and two #NHL rinks, while the other features an NHL rink with a 2,500-seating capacity. 🚧 To ensure this behemoth was structurally sound (because, earthquakes) a steel buckling restrained brace system was installed. The braces are comprised of #steel tubes with a concrete-encased bar inside. ☃ Because of all the ice, the building must maintain a temperature of 55 degrees (in SoCal). Fortunately, the design is similar to that of a cold storage facility. 🏟 Great Park Ice & FivePoint Arena is the largest ice facility in California. Coming in at an astonishing 280,000 SF, it is also one of the largest in the U.S. 🏗 Thanks to Nucor Building Systems' pre-engineered metal buildings and insulated metal wall panels, nobody is skating on thin ice. 😆 🦆 I also heard it's the official practice facility for the Anaheim Ducks. #themoreyouknow 🌈 🌟 #hockey #womanofsteel

Discover more about how #PVC is part of the game!
⚽ Another match is happening today at the VELTINS-Arena in Gelsenkirchen for Euro 2024. The VELTINS-Arena, originally named Arena 3AufSchalke, opened in August 2001 and is home to seven-time German champions and 1996/97 UEFA Cup winners Schalke. This stadium is a marvel of modern engineering, featuring a retractable roof and a slide-out pitch, designed to accommodate 62,000 spectators for league matches. 💡The roof structure is particularly noteworthy, including a PVC membrane that enhances its durability and aesthetic appeal. The movable section of the roof, positioned directly above the field, can be opened or closed in just 30 minutes, adding to the stadium's versatility. The fixed sections of the roof require approximately 3,600 tons of steel, while the movable segment weighs around 600 tons. The truss construction, made from circular hollow profiles, spans an impressive 226 by 186 meters, covering the entire field and stands. 🔧 Fully Rebuilt: 1900s Wooden Bowling Arm Bowled Victor Trumper! 🏏 Engineers at Cambridge have successfully reconstructed one of the world’s oldest known bowling machines, which famously bowled out legendary Australian batsman Victor Trumper. Dr. John Venn, the inventor of the Venn Diagram, created this engineering contraption. 🔍 Key Insights: 1️⃣ A Historical Masterpiece: Using patent illustrations and an old photograph found online, Cambridge engineers brought the 2-metre tall contraption back to life with materials available over 120 years ago. This remarkable reconstruction showcases the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the early 20th century. 2️⃣ Engineering and Innovation: Led by Professor Hugh Hunt, the project highlights the incredible creativity of Dr. John Venn. Known for his work on Venn Diagrams, Venn also invented this fascinating bowling machine using wood, string, and mathematical principles. 3️⃣ Authentic Recreation: The team meticulously crafted the machine to ensure historical accuracy, utilising high-quality hardwood and traditional woodworking techniques. The final product, capable of bowling at 33mph (53km/h), is a functional device and a historical relic. 🔗 Explore the full story of the reconstructed bowling machine and its historical significance: https://lnkd.in/grRvfVba 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can historical reconstructions like this bowling machine inspire modern engineering and innovation? 💬 Join the conversation on the fascinating blend of history and technology that brings past innovations to life. #cricket #engineering #venndiagram #cambridge #innovation #woodcentral #sports #crickethistory #woodcentralau1

“Humans make things: it’s not a second job, it’s an impulse.” This quote from Jonathan Anderson embodies the vitality of craft, and its importance to our humanity. A recent trip to Sussex reminded me of the depth of artisanal talent we have across the UK. Sadly, as highlighted by Alice Fisher in this article for The Observer, some of our unique heritage craft industries are increasingly at risk. According to the charity Heritage Crafts, the UK is facing a near extinction of some heritage skills at a faster rate than countries in Europe. Crafts mentioned in this article, such as cricket ball and bat manufacturing, and kilt and bagpipe making, are all either extinct or near extinction according to the charity’s Red List of Endangered Crafts. These skills support sectors crucial to our cultural heritage, and the possibility of their disappearance is truly concerning. But there are encouraging signs: last month, the UK ratified UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, committing to protect local crafts, social practices, festive events and rituals. While we are yet to see the impact of this in practice, it’s an important signal of the cultural and economic value that our craft sector plays in British society, and the need to secure its future. Moreover, as this piece highlights, it’s incredible to see how some craftspeople are adapting, by fusing contemporary and heritage techniques and harnessing evolving technologies and materials to create a new path for traditional making in the modern world. In challenging and evolving traditional techniques, makers are ensuring that this vital part of our cultural heritage stands the test of time. I am continually inspired by the innovation and resilience of the UK’s makers and am excited for what the future holds for artisans across the country. #Heritage
