As an island capital city and gateway to the Antarctic, What makes the 2040 Climate Ready Hobart Strategy so strong? 🏋♀️ ZERO emissions across the Hobart community by 2040 (no NET). That means we are committed to real action to getting off fossil fuels, reducing methane from organics. 🤲 Tackling BOTH emissions (the root cause of climate change) and resilience (building our capacity to adapt and cope with climate driven impacts) at the same time. 🐳 Valuing nature and nature-based solutions 🌲🌳🌿 💚 👥 We do this TOGETHER by mobilising HOBART 🚵♀️ All about SOLUTIONS to make change where it matters most We wanted to make sure our response was reflective of the whole Hobart community. It is why we had more than 1000 face to face conversations, involved 120 young people, held 9 hours of co-design workshops with 240 climate leaders and hosted Tasmania's first climate assembly. Through the Indigenous Community-Based Climate Monitoring (ICBCM) Program, Indigenous communities are gathering knowledge and creating solutions rooted in traditional practices and firsthand experiences. In partnership with Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), we’re collaborating with Indigenous-led groups to monitor, adapt, and respond to climate impacts. Here’s what you need to know about this pivotal agreement and its implications: 1️⃣ Global Commitment: The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to pursue limiting it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This flexibility allows nations to tailor their commitments based on their unique circumstances and capabilities. 3️⃣ Long-Term Goals: Beyond emission reduction targets, the agreement emphasizes adaptation to climate impacts, fostering resilience, and supporting sustainable development pathways. 🔥 🌍 Climate change, biodiversity loss, cost of living… we face interconnected challenges that demand bold solutions. That’s why we call on the EU for a €1 trillion to steer Europe towards a prosperous and just transition. The Green Deal and RepowerEU objectives require an additional 2% of European GDP annually. This investment is crucial to limit global warming to 1.5°C and avert catastrophic impacts. But with the end of Next Generation EU approaching in 2026, there's a risk of reduced investment, especially impacting Central and Eastern European and Southern European countries. A new investment plan for the post-Next Generation EU period is urgently needed and it should support: 🌱 Implementing the Green Deal, including by over-achieving the EU’s 2030 climate targets, and support decisive progress towards future 2040 climate targets. 🌱 Boosting EU strategic autonomy, energy security, resilience and competitive sustainability. 🌱 Providing a significant contribution to meeting additional climate investment needs 🌱 Closing the funding gap for the achievement of the 2030 biodiversity strategy. 🌱 Reinforcing a just transition that provides opportunities for all and leaves no one behind. Today at the Nordic Pavilion, «Adaptation & Resilience» is taking the stage. Climate change adaptation is crucial for our security and resilience. Floods, landslides, and the increasing uncertainty around food production and supply are just a few examples of the climate change impacts we are already experiencing—and which will intensify in the future. Additionally, transboundary climate risks, such as water security and the spread of disease, further complicate the challenges we face. This is why it’s essential that we adapt to these new realities, and do so quickly—both as a region and as a global community. From a briefing on the Adaptation Gap Report 2024, Nordic Leadership on Climate Risks, and exploring multi-stakeholder cooperation strategies for addressing loss and damage, to the critical role of parliamentarians in driving climate action and political will, we’ll explore a variety of topics within «Adaptation & Resilience». Climate change is a top-three concern for South Africans. For Petco, it’s encouraging to see that South Africans are becoming more environmentally conscious by the day.
