📢 Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK Launches £55,000 Small Grants Programme 📢 We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our Small Grants Programme aimed at advancing research to improve outcomes for head and neck cancer patients. With a total funding pool of £55,000, we’ll be supporting 1-3 innovative research projects that have the potential to translate into clinical practice, benefit patients directly, or lay the groundwork for future large-scale studies. We’re encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, welcoming proposals from allied health professionals and researchers working in the following areas: 🔬 Early detection and diagnosis 💡 Novel treatment approaches 🏥 Addressing health inequalities 🌟 Improving patient experience and quality of life Applications are open until 6 December 2024, with successful projects announced in February 2025. Earlier this year, the NCI Center for Cancer Health Equity (CCHE) established a new team of cancer researchers named the #CancerEquityLeaders. These individuals will come together under National Cancer Institute (NCI) leadership to advance health equity efforts in cancer care. “We wanted to initially focus our efforts on minority-serving institutions, which represent a rich resource of trainees, faculty, patients, and communities of need,” noted Sanya Springfield, PhD, Director of the NCI CCHE. “However, we made an observation on the other end of the professional ladder—the increase in diversity of our academic leaders and cancer center directors. We wanted to harness their collective expertise and acknowledge this positive moment in history.” The NCI recently revealed the three main objectives of the new group: 1. Assess the landscape to elucidate critical strengths and gaps in cancer equity infrastructure. 2. Prioritize the critical needs for expanding institutional capacity and achieving cancer health equity. 3. Develop a strategic agenda to enhance the #NationalCancerPlan. 🎉 Exciting news! 🎉 We would like to congratulate BME faculty member, Dr. Jared Weis, as the new recipient of the American Cancer Society Research Scholar Grant: “Predicting Cancer Treatment-Related Cardiotoxicity by Imaging Cardiac Mechanical Stiffness” 🎗️ Insight into this innovative research: Breast cancer patients are at risk for cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicities with long-term risks of cardiac dysfunction and heart failure that significantly degrades the quality and length of breast cancer survivorship. The goal of this research is to optimize and assess a novel biophysics-informed imaging analysis tool for quantifying myocardial tissue mechanical stiffness to improve cardiotoxicity management strategies for breast cancer patients at risk of irreversible cardiovascular damage. 🤝 Thank you to co-investigators: 🔹 Giselle C. 📢 I was excited to attend the the second international Cardio-Oncology Conference November 8-9 in Cincinatti 🇺🇸with survivors of cancer, professionals, and researchers. We heard inspiring presentations from f.e. survivors Peter Wolf Ania Buchacz and an excellent presentation about the transition guideline from Jikke Wams, our PhD student for the European project #EUCAYASNet. 🇪🇺 With advancing therapies and longer survival rates, it’s essential that we address the heart health of (former) cancer patients before, during, and after treatment.♥️ ✨ My Key Takeaways: * Unfortunately cardiotoxicity due to cancer treatment could be a serious problem for survivors. * International guidelines are the cornerstone of optimal cardio-oncology care. * Transition and personalized care plans are needed to ensure survivorship care after treatment for childhood cancer. * Collaborative International Research: Researchers are increasingly collaborating across fields to drive breakthroughs in both cardiology and oncology, promoting integrated patient care. 💪 Let’s continue to improve care for these patients! #CardioOncology #childhoodcancer #cincy_cardio_onc Prinses Máxima Centrum voor Kinderoncologie, PanCare, Jikke Wams Dorus Kouwenberg, Childhood Cancer International - Europe, Youth Cancer Europe , Sofia's Hope, Inc. #MediaAlert: ACRF awards include $12 million funding toward NIF-supported national total-body PET/CT network to advance cancer research. The Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, has announced the award of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation’s (ACRF) 2024 grants at Government House in Canberra. This announcement includes two National Imaging Facility (NIF) supported grants to deliver advanced total-body PET/CT scanners, significantly enhancing Australian health research capabilities. These state-of-the-art total-body PET/CT scanners are capable of capturing the entire body in a single session with unprecedented detail and accuracy. This technology facilitates earlier and more precise disease detection, ultimately leading to more effective treatments and improved patient outcomes. NIF will contribute $2.45 million to these grants under the Australian Government Department of Education’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (#NCRIS). These cutting-edge instruments will be integrated into Australia’s advanced imaging network at Alfred Health (through NIF’s Partner Monash University) and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (through NIF’s Partner University of Melbourne), marking a significant step forward in the advancement of health research in Australia. The Florida-California Cancer Research, Education and Engagement Health Equity Center (CaRE2 Health Equity Center)is under the leadership of Drs. Chanita Hughes-Halbert, Associate Director for Cancer Equity at USC Norris, and Mariana Stern, Associate Director for Population Science at USC Norris. This center addresses cancer disparities with a focus on lung and pancreatic cancer among African Americans and Latinos, though not limited to those cancers. CaRE2 also includes a variety of cores such as the education core, a community outreach core, and the tissue modeling and drug development core. Change Our Future has committed to funding numerous American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) programs and initiatives to develop the next generation of cancer researchers. These programs include the AACR Special Program for High School Students and the AACR Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Travel Awards. At the 2023 AACR Minority Scholars in Cancer Research Conference, COF supported 3 scholars: - Alexis E. Carey, a PhD candidate at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Carey is currently focused on improving outcomes for elderly patients with melanoma by studying age-specific immune responses to melanoma and the impact of aged bone marrow on anti-tumor response. - Afia P. Ohemeng, MD, a PhD candidate at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Ohemeng is working toward integrating her clinical and laboratory skills to build a career in translational research. - Dominique V. Parker, a PhD candidate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. ASCO Applauds Senate for Prioritizing Cancer Research in FY 2025 LHHS Bill Increases NIH, NCI Funding, Matches ASCO Funding Request for ARPA-H August 2, 2024 The Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is applauding the Senate Appropriations Committee for its bipartisan support of federal cancer research in the fiscal year (FY) 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies spending bill. For FY 2025, the Senate is allocating $48.851 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a $1.77 billion increase over FY 2024 funding. The bill includes funding for the 21st Century Cures Act, averting and reversing scheduled cuts. For the National Cancer Institute (NCI), appropriators allocated $7.49 billion, and called for restoring $216 million in funding for the Cancer Moonshot.
