🚀 Exciting news from Cordance Medical! They've just secured a $399,358 award from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), specifically The National Institutes of Health and the NIH National Cancer Institute. This funding is set to revolutionize brain tumor diagnostics with their innovative NeuroAccess System. By optimizing non-invasive focused ultrasound for brain tumor liquid biopsy, Cordance Medical aims to address the critical need for effective blood-based molecular characterization in brain cancer patients. 🔬 The project focuses on ensuring the safety and efficacy of the NeuroAccess System, which uses focused ultrasound and microbubbles to open the blood-brain barrier non-invasively. This allows biomarkers to enter systemic circulation, facilitating liquid biopsies where traditional methods fall short. Change Our Future has committed to funding numerous American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) programs and initiatives to develop the next generation of cancer researchers. These programs include the AACR Special Program for High School Students and the AACR Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Travel Awards. At the 2023 AACR Minority Scholars in Cancer Research Conference, COF supported 3 scholars: - Alexis E. Carey, a PhD candidate at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Carey is currently focused on improving outcomes for elderly patients with melanoma by studying age-specific immune responses to melanoma and the impact of aged bone marrow on anti-tumor response. - Afia P. Ohemeng, MD, a PhD candidate at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Ohemeng is working toward integrating her clinical and laboratory skills to build a career in translational research. - Dominique V. Parker, a PhD candidate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. When it comes to cancer metastasis, it takes two to tango. ⁣ ⁣ Both TGF-beta and RAS signaling pathways work to spur the spread of cancer in lung adenocarcinoma. But while targeting TGF can have significant side effects, research by the lab of Joan Massagué at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center suggests a new candidate for medical intervention.⁣ ⁣ Published in Cell by Cell Press, the latest study points to new opportunities to potentially prevent metastasis, thanks to an updated understanding of the underlying processes.⁣ ⁣ Born in Spain, Joan Massagué received the inaugural Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science in 2006. He is now a member of the Board of Directors of The Vilcek Foundation and is internationally recognized for his work as Chief Scientific Officer and Director of the Sloan Kettering Institute at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In addition to his groundbreaking research, Massagué is a mentor to others, training the next generation of scientists as a professor at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences. New publication from Dr. Samantha Terry’s lab at King's College London School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, showcases the exceptional capabilities of our SmART+ irradiator system. This study highlights significant advancements in Molecular Radionuclide Therapy (MRT), targeting radioactivity directly to cancer cells. Building on the success of β− particle-emitters like [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 and 177Lu-DOTA-TATE, the research explores an expanded portfolio of radionuclides, including α-particle and Auger electron (AE) emitters. Notably, 99mTc complexes demonstrated promising results against various cancer cell lines in vitro. Our SmART+ irradiator system played a crucial role in this research, helping determine and compare the biological effects of [123I]I and [188Re]ReO4 with external beam radiotherapy on triple-negative breast cancer cells expressing the human sodium iodide symporter (hNIS). This work underscores the importance of understanding radiobiological effects at the cellular level, paving the way for more precise and effective cancer treatments.
