Soil is at the center of the most urgent societal crises,” said Dr. Felipe Aburto, assistant professor soil scientist at Texas A&M and a USDA E. Kika De La Garza (EKDLG) fellow. “The world needs more soil scientists.” Aburto and other EKDLG fellows helped establish SSoilCOP, an initiative to engage urban and underrepresented students in soil science by creating pathways into the field. SSoilCOP is funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and aspires to provide a clear route for employment within the USDA. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e3muUtPm

Such an inspiring initiative! Soil science is crucial for tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges, from food security to climate resilience. Programs like SSoilCOP not only build awareness but also create opportunities for underrepresented students to make a lasting impact in the field. Kudos to Dr. Felipe Aburto and the USDA for driving this important work!
