The Crawford Fund is a non-profit, non-government organisation and registered charity that works to raise awareness of the benefits to Australia and developing countries from international agricultural research, commissions studies on research policy and practice, and arranges specialist training activities for developing country scientists. What is international agricultural research? Agricultural research designed to benefit developing countries (their farmers, their environment and their economies) and to foster mutual understanding can be defined as international agricultural research. Since the majority of people in less developed countries live in rural areas and are dependent on the land for employment and their food security, support for agricultural research is one of the most effective ways that Australia can assist in their development. History Established in June 1987 by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), the Crawford Fund was named thus in honour of the late Sir John Crawford and commemorates his outstanding services to international agricultural research. The Crawford Fund depends on grants and donations from governments, private companies, corporations, charitable trusts and individual Australians. It also welcomes partnerships with agencies and organisations in Australia and overseas. The Fund promotes and supports international R&D activities in which Australian research organisations and companies are active participants. It supports the work of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) and other international research centres.

Sir John Crawford was a remarkable Australian who recognised the need for not only science but also policies, governance and institutional structures for delivery of food and nutrition security. 'Buying Time: J.G. Crawford and International Agricultural Research' explains Crawford’s embrace of agriculture, and specifically of the promise of the Green Revolution, not only as a simple solution, but a means of ‘buying time’ while other pressing issues might also be addressed. 🇰🇪🧑🌾 "This research has provided valuable insights into the adoption of climate-smart technologies among smallholder farmers in Baringo County, Kenya. The findings have important implications for local stakeholders, offering practical recommendations to enhance technology uptake and agricultural sustainability,” highlights our student Awardee Geoffrey Wanjiku, a PhD student from The University of Queensland, who recently visited Baringo County in Kenya as part of his research. “Additionally, the research establishes a foundation for ongoing knowledge exchange and collaboration, benefiting both the local community in Kenya and the broader agricultural research community in Queensland and Australia,” he added. Dr. Joseph Macharia from QUT (Queensland University of Technology), one of our 2023 Crawford-in-Queensland International Engagement Award Winners, has been working hard to provide hands-on online marketing training and technology engagement for a trainee, Ofusina, from Samoa in Brisbane, and to conduct workshops in Samoa. Ofusina travelled to Queensland as part of the training project. She is pictured here with Peter Kearney, who is an expert in biodynamic agriculture and who utilises technologies such as social media in sharing knowledge and marketing. “This project warrants close attention and support from the international community, policymakers, and the academic world, as it embodies the intersection of entrepreneurship, technology, and sustainable development.
