Together, we can change this. · 67% of Canadians know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse. · Indigenous women are 12 x more likely to be murdered or go missing compared to non-Indigenous women. · Children witnessing violence in the home face twice the rate of psychiatric disorders. Let's raise awareness, support those who have experienced violence or are struggling and work towards a future free from violence. 🟧 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 🟧 As we unite for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, it's time to amplify our voices and demand change. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a scourge that affects us all. In Zimbabwe, the statistics are staggering, with countless women and men suffering in silence. It's crucial to remember that GBV is not just a women's issue. Men also endure violence and often face stigma when seeking help. We must break the silence and advocate for the mental health and well-being of all survivors, regardless of gender. Let's stand together, speak out, and take action. No one should live in fear. Together, we can create a safer, more just society for everyone. #EndGBV #16DaysOfActivism #BreakTheSilence #mentalhealthmatters

Also important to look at is the use of drugs in coercive control, which remains missing from the conversation and leaves some women's experiences in the shadows. Using drugs as a means to control an intimate partner can be underpinned by stereotypical views of gender. It could also potentially heighten the risk of overdose and blood-borne viruses due to control surrounding access to drugs and paraphernalia, on top of drug use potentially being more frequent in family and domestic violence and drug-involved violence having a higher odds of injury. The stigma drug using women face, which can hinder help-seeking, can also be associated with the view they are "violating" gender norms by engaging in illicit drug use. We must reflect on our own views about drug use and also the policies that impact service responses to be able to better support women who use drugs and are experiencing violence.
#MEDIA After a series of highly publicised murders of women in Australia, we have seen funding towards addressing men’s violence against women. However, to reduce and prevent gender-based violence, we need to address the root causes and contributors. Matilda Centre researchers Dr Siobhan O'Dean, Dr Lucy Grummitt and Dr Steph Kershaw share in The Conversation how #mentalhealth, #trauma and substance use affect gender-based violence, and what can be done to prevent and finally reduce gender-based violence once and for all. Full story: https://lnkd.in/gszJua4s
To tackle gendered violence, we also need to look at drugs, trauma and mental health
