🎉 Today is an International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 🎉 “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women” iDE Ethiopia is celebrating the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in our office by raising awareness for our staff and the community we work with. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a global issue that affects individuals across all sexes, though it disproportionally affects women and girls. Use a “ do no harm” approach to prioritize the safety and dignity of all participants and staff. Combine explicit efforts to engage men and boys to challenge patriarchal norms with targeted activities to empower women and girls. Did you know that a workplace with a GBV can lead to decreased productivity, poor mental health, and higher turnover rates? #EndGBV #YesAllWomen #GenderEquity #NoExcuse #iDE #ProjectFury

World Report 2024; Violence against Women and Girls in Pakistan Violence in opposition to girls and women, which includes rape, murder, acid attacks, home violence, denial of education, sexual harassment at workplaces, and child and forced marriage has become a severe problem in Pakistan. Human rights defenders estimate that more or less 1,000 girls are murdered in so-called “honor killings” each year. The United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that 18.9 million ladies in Pakistan are married earlier than the age of 18 and 4.6 million earlier than 15. Many married ladies are pressured into risky pregnancies at a younger age and pregnancies which are too intently spaced. Women from non secular minority groups continue to be especially inclined to pressured marriage. Over 6 million school aged children and thirteen million secondary school-age youngsters in Pakistan have been out of schools, maximum of them girls. Human Rights found that the reasons including lack of schools, costs associated with studying, child marriage, harmful child labor, and gender discrimination. Moreover, In Punjab province, 10,365 instances of violence in opposition to girls have been reported to the police within side the first 4 months of 2023, in line with a neighborhood NGO. The real range of incidents is probably to be tons better given obstacles to reporting, dangerous social norms, and useless and dangerous responses via way of means of the police. Pakistan`s conviction charge for rape is much less than 3 percent. To anyone reading this, I am compelled to ask: Why does Pakistan continue to witness an alarming rates of violence against women despite the awareness of these issues, I wonder what are the barriers preventing the authorities from taking more stringent actions to address and mitigate this issue?

IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE WOMEN FEEL SAFE… In recent days and weeks, there has been an increase in acts of violence against women and girls, including those resulting in the death of Rebecca Cheptegei, a Kenyan Olympic athlete who was set on fire by her ex-boyfriend. Mercy Vangervihi, a 14-year-old girl who was raped and severely assaulted by a 15-year-old boy and Christiana, who was abducted and murdered by her colleague. The list is endless. Approximately 30% of women worldwide may encounter any form of physical and/or sexual violence during their lifetime. There exist multiple manifestations of violence, including sexualised, physical, psychological, social, and financial violence. Perpetrators of violence against women include individuals who are from all socioeconomic backgrounds, nationalities, religions, ages, educational levels, and economic categories. Men constitute the bulk of offenders worldwide, and in instances of sexualised violence, they are nearly all male. Acts of violence committed against women are a clear expression of the unequal power relations that exist between males and females. The sources of this violence can be identified not only at the individual level but also very significantly, at the institutional level. Complete elimination of such factors is crucial to prevent any further occurrence of violence. In order to bring about the desired transformation, it is imperative that we change the mindsets that fuel violence against women and girls and reduce this abuse as a normal aspect of existence. ________________________________________ If you are new here, my name is Mojolaoluwa Olunaike. On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we stand united against gender-based violence. In Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days. Together, we can change this. · 67% of Canadians know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse. · Indigenous women are 12 x more likely to be murdered or go missing compared to non-Indigenous women. · Children witnessing violence in the home face twice the rate of psychiatric disorders. Let's raise awareness, support those who have experienced violence or are struggling and work towards a future free from violence. If you or someone you know is in need of help, dial 2-1-1 for support and services. Source: Canadian Women's Foundation

Sexual violence is a harrowing reality faced by countless women globally, yet certain marginalized groups remain invisible in mainstream discourse. My latest piece for Feminism In India In India sheds light on the systemic invisibility and brutal violence faced by women from Denotified Tribes (DNTs) in India. These communities are left out of official crime data, denying them the legislative protections they urgently need. My article explores how sexual violence is wielded as a tool of patriarchal and systemic dominance, further marginalizing DNT women and silencing their voices. Read the full article to understand how we can bring attention to these overlooked narratives and advocate for change. #FeminismInIndia #SexualViolence #GenderJustice #DenotifiedTribes #Intersectionality #SocialJustice #WomensRights

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The objective is to raise awareness on the magnitude of gender-based violence, which remains a major public health issue around the world. Many women and girls have experienced one form of physical and/or sexual violence. Here is an article I shared on Global Health Today two months ago on the pervasive issue of violence against women. #violenceagainstwomen #ENDviolence #publichealth #genderbasedviolence

Which women did not experience psychological, physical, sexual violence and abuse in life? How many grand-mothers and mothers told us about the abuses they went through? How are we talking about violence with our daughters and sons? Which strategy is in place in our working environnement to prevent violences (ie: harassement) and protect us? Violence against women is and has always been among us, even in working environnements (specially the psychological one, causing toxic environnements, abuse, health’s issues, loss in performance, suicide). Going through violences and transforming such psychological suffering into knowledge, competences and spiritual growth has influnced/is influencing the way women see, feel and interact with men, with others and the world. When violence is silented, tolerated and nothing is done, we all become responsible for it.
