As a new Foundation CEO, I derive so much inspiration from Lori Bezahler at Edward W. Hazen Foundation. They operated with courage and humility, listening closely to community organizers and internalizing those lessons in their grantmaking practice. Listen to our conversation about Hazen’s decision to spend down the endowment (aka going all in), the power imbalances between funders and grantees, operationalizing social justice values in foundation work, and much more. https://lnkd.in/eua_QtEN
WATCH NOW: In a compelling dialogue with Vivian Tseng, president and CEO of the Foundation for Child Development, Lori Bezahler, former president of the Edward W. Hazen Foundation shares an inside look at the Hazen Foundation’s groundbreaking journey—a journey marked by direct action and collaborative decision-making with grantees to advance social justice. This conversation challenges conventional philanthropy and highlights the power of community-driven change. https://lnkd.in/eua_QtEN #socialjustice #philanthropy #capacitybuilding #FCDConversationSeries

I recently pitched into the debate on philanthropy with a presentation at an evening hosted by Via Foundation (Nadace Via). It is my take on a comprehensive theory of giving, from the motivations to the process and best practices to what I think the future of philanthropy should look like. A few takeaways: 👉 Showing an interest in the well-being of others is the most important task of humanity. 👉 Philanthropy is ultimately about the meeting of the heart and the mind. 👉 The donor receives as much from the grantee as the grantee receives from the donor. 👉 Giving must have a focus, or it loses efficacy. 👉 Philanthropy balances the short-termism of politics. 👉 When dealing with the state, we should always have a neutral or negative business benefit from the changes we advocate. And as I learned just after presenting, the word philanthropy actually comes from Greek, not Latin. So, the roots of the concept of giving are even older than I thought. 😊 https://lnkd.in/e4pWBBx7

This discussion of evidence in decision making was eye-opening for me! You can now view it at the link below. We discussed: What is evidence? How do we challenge the traditional preference for statistical data to also include other forms of information? What do we do in the absence of good information, or, alternatively, when and how do we get beyond "admiring the problem" to stop data collection and act? What are strategies for dealing with "fact resistance" and data denial?
