About us
The primary goals of The Philanthropy Lab are to: spark and expand students’ interest and participation in philanthropy; increase the prevalence and priority of philanthropy education in U.S. colleges and universities; and become self-sustaining at our partner schools, allowing the Philanthropy Lab to have the funds to expand the program to other universities. We engage college students in philanthropy by giving them the tangible responsibility of directing real money to nonprofit organizations in the context of full-credit undergraduate courses. We believe it is important for higher education to help shape not only well-educated leaders, but also responsible citizens. Often, philanthropy education is missing from curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular offerings related to civic engagement and leadership. We hope to increase the importance of philanthropy education at universities so that more students will consider what it means to give of their money, time, and skills with careful consideration.

As the year draws to a close, I want to reflect on an incredible opportunity I took part in this past semester. For my capstone, I enrolled in Philanthropy and the Public Good, a course that promised to deepen my understanding of philanthropy and its impact. What I didn't anticipate was the opportunity to steward $75,000 in grant funding, entrusted to our class to allocate to local nonprofits. Over the course of several weeks, we carefully evaluated which organizations would benefit most from this funding. We wrestled with complex questions: Should we prioritize short-term impact or long-term sustainability? Which sectors could maximize the positive change we looked to create? These discussions were both challenging and rewarding, pushing us to think critically about how to make a difference in our community. I want to give a special shoutout to Andrew Hogue and Mark Richards for their guidance and expertise throughout this incredible journey and to The Philanthropy Lab for making this experience possible.
