It of course takes more than just saying you're inclusive for the impact to happen BUT if you are being and have implemented things to make your business accessible SHOUT ABOUT IT! People who require inclusive practices will more closer to you because you have made it clear you support these peoples needs. Now I don't know about you but if I knew I could show up and be able to experience an event at my own pace, have a space I could take a break from people, if I needed a hearing loop - it was available, if there was captions on the keynote speakers slides... all of this and more I would give me right arm to attend! If an event didn't mention anything about inclusion or at least be known for considering it - that is a hard no for me regardless of how great the event is! If I can't attend and feel my needs are met I just won't do it... I won't be the only one with this attitude towards only moving towards businesses where I have been considered - How much money could you be losing out as a result of this... Expect the unexpected! Working with Welcome Break to create video content for their annual conference, we added a bit of extra magic by printing a comic using video stills that can be kept, shared and enjoyed by colleagues long after the event. Annual conferences are vital opportunities to get the organisation together but potentially can be a bit dry. Video content grabs your audience's attention from the get-go and encourages engagement 👀 Here we worked on a concept that would inject fun and energy, and create a sense of anticipation at the start of their conference, whilst showing the human side of the leadership team and showcasing what makes the business unique. Think: opening credits of Grange Hill - anyone remember the flying sausage? 🌭 Instead for the Welcome Break video we followed the team across multiple locations as they assembled for the annual conference and overcame the odd bump in the road to get there! One universal truth of live events: Many of the most valuable conversations aren't happening on stage or in keynote-type sessions. Those conversations are had on the periphery and in informal spaces – over coffee, between sessions, in break areas and lobbies – and the connections and points made often go unrecorded and unshared. Planning a book signing event and hoping to draw in the Gen Z crowd? Let me tell you—it’s not about just showing up with a table and some books. Gen Z expects more. Way more. Here’s the game plan that I created for one of my clients: ✔️ Pick a Venue That Speaks Their Language Forget boring conference rooms or outdated bookstores. Think trendy cafés, pop-up shops, or art spaces. Bonus points if the venue has Instagram-worthy spots for those selfies with your book. ✔️ Make It More Than Just a Signing Gen Z craves experiences. Turn it into a mini event: `A Q&A session about your writing journey. `A live reading of your favorite chapter. `A creative workshop related to your book’s theme (think poetry slams, character design, or DIY crafts). ✔️ Market Like You’re One of Them `Create TikToks teasing the event. `Share IG Stories counting down the days. `Use interactive polls (“Which chapter should I read at the event?”). They’ll feel like they’re part of the planning process—and Gen Z loves that. ✔️ Keep It Short, Sweet, and Flexible This is Gen Z. They’re busy. Keep the event under 2 hours and have clear start and end times. Bonus points if there’s a virtual component for those who can’t attend IRL. ✔️ Follow Up After the Event Post photos, tag attendees, and thank them for coming. Keep the momentum going with a “What did you think of the event?” poll or a sneak peek of your next book. The key here? Make it fun. Make it interactive. After capturing hundreds of meetings and discussions for all sorts of organizations, I’ve observed most audiences tend to go through a very similar series of reactions, which I call The 4 Stages of Graphic Recording. Curiosity: People wonder who the person with the foam core sheets and easels is and what they are going to do at the meeting. Amazement: As the first chart takes shape people see their ideas transformed into images, and it seems like magic. Delight: As the event space fills with completed charts, people love seeing how their experiences and conversations have been captured. They smile, laugh, and try to anticipate what will happen next. Gratitude: At the end of the day, people take pictures of the completed work and many personally thank the graphic recorder for making the meeting so pleasurable and exciting. Graphic recording doesn’t just improve comprehension, foster connection, and provide a shareable visual record of key takeaways—it takes your entire audience on an engaging journey of creativity.
