Last Thursday we were invited to attend the Unseen UK Business Awards 2024 as one of the nominees in the Business Impact category. If you don’t know about Unseen UK they have been at the forefront of combating modern slavery in the UK for many years and are the people behind the Modern Slavery helpline. They rock! It was an honour to be nominated and also a privilege to be asked to contribute as one of the guest speakers for the evening. Due to pressing issues at home I was unable to attend and so I sent this video message instead. However, Nick (director) and Sarah (marketing ninja) were both able to attend, which is a good thing because we only went and won the jolly thing! It’s all a bit crazy and proper humbling. We NEVER started out on this coffee roasting adventure to win awards or gain recognition. We simply wanted to help survivors of slavery to recover hope, restore confidence and rebuild their lives. And by the grace of God that’s what we’ve seen happen time and time and time again. Sure, we’d like to think that our commitment to Ethical Sourcing, Compassionate Employment and Strategic Investment will make a positive impact in the lives of people from crop to cup (and even cause a few ripples in the wider coffee industry too). And we know that our vision to create a workplace in which our staff are constantly reminded that 1. You are safe; 2. You are precious; 3. You are free to dream – is a good one. And we know that employing someone (the wonderful Sophie) in a pastoral role to care for the women has been fantastically beneficial to our team. But we never did any of that to catch the eye of the movers and shakers in the anti-slavery sector or the coffee industry. We did it because that’s how we felt called and compelled to both do business and fight slavery. While it’s lovely to hold this trophy in our hands, I have to say that the joyful giggles that fill our roastery each week, the stories of past and present employees whose lives took a turn for the better through working at Manumit, and yes – people like you who buy and enjoy our coffee – these will always be the sweetest reward for us.
