“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of [people] and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” – Mark Twain
In this regard, I am endlessly grateful to have served in the US Navy. Over 4 deployments in 6 years, I visited 12 countries (some multiple times). In all of those, I intentionally found as much cultural immersion and experience as I could. I climbed the steps of Buddhist temples; I rode through the desert on a camel to a nomadic camp by an oasis; I bartered in souks; I explored rainforests… Often in my travels, I was the only person like me for miles. The only American, the only white person, the only English-speaker, the only Christian. Looking back from where I am in my career now, it all feels like prep-work for guiding company #culture and #DEI programs!
After all that, I can say with complete confidence that in this, Mark Twain got it right, with one caveat: #Travel is fatal to prejudice, etc, when done intentionally. If you’re traveling to do all the things you could do within 5 miles of where you live, then you have to broaden your #perspective. Do something out of your comfort zone and see how much you grow from that experience! Travel to learn and experience, and you’ll see how quickly things like prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness melt away.
