🌟 Inspiring Girls to Pursue Careers in Tech: A Dialogue from TechSheCan 🌟 Recently, I asked a question in the "TechSheCan: Women Empowering Women in Technology" Facebook group, to explore methods of introducing STEM careers to young girls in schools. This discussion served as a reminder of our crucial role in molding the future of technology, particularly for women. I inquired about the effectiveness of collaborating with local school systems for events like "Career Day," or organizing presentations to showcase tech careers for women. This inquiry led to a flurry of insightful responses, reflecting our community's collective wisdom and experiences. Marnie Stockman described her involvement with STEM programs in Maryland, noting their ongoing need for business advisors and volunteers. She highlighted the fulfilling experience of judging student capstone projects, illustrating a tangible way to motivate the next generation. Kelly Weber Francisco brought attention to the Great American Teach-In in Florida, akin to Career Day. She observed that while elementary schools often successfully attract speakers, middle and high schools struggle more. This disparity unveils a unique chance for us to influence young minds, particularly in emerging fields like cybersecurity and robotics clubs, which are gaining popularity yet are in need of greater female participation. These discussions transcend mere talk – they represent a call to action for each of us. Whether it's through engagement in local school events, mentorship in clubs, or simply by sharing our own journeys, every action we take is crucial in encouraging young girls to envision themselves as future leaders in tech. As members of this vibrant channel, we hold the power and opportunity to effect change. My journey as an Indian woman with an invisible disability in the tech industry has been both challenging and enriching. The future of STEM is female, and it's bright! Today at One Young World I had the privilege of participating in an eye-opening Braindate by e180 that left me buzzing with inspiration and new ideas! The topic? The transformative power of social media in NPO growth and development. A highlight was learning from the incredible Japnit A. Founder of Go Girl Organisation. Her journey of growing their Instagram following to an impressive 70k is nothing short of remarkable. 👏 Japnit, your strategies and insights are gold! But it wasn't just about the numbers. What truly resonated was the shared passion among this group for advancing women in STEM. In a world where only 35% of senior tech leaders are women, it's clear we need all hands on deck to change the status quo. Thank you Astha Sharma Marcia Bikié Safaa Ayyad Kaori Kitamura for the incredible work you are doing. Meeting these amazing women, each making significant strides in their respective countries, was a powerful reminder of the global nature of our mission. Where are the social media posts from women in STEM? Reported by the BBC this morning "Groups supporting women in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) fields are struggling to survive as corporations’ shrinking budgets, and cultural changes, see diversity strategies take a back seat." According to the Zoe Kleinman "A quick search online reveals a number of women in stem social media accounts that have not posted any content in several months." ChickTech just announced they are closing. They now join Girls in Tech, Inc., Women Who Code, and many smaller groups that have announced they are closing. What a devastating blow to the work of building diverse, inclusive, and equitable Tech workplaces. It baffles the mind that support and funding for organizations has dried up so rapidly in just a matter of months. In light of the recent EEOC data that representation of women in tech has only grown 0.6 basis points over 19 years from 22% in 2005 to 22.6%, you'd think that organizations would be investing more to find new solutions to increase hiring, retention, and promotion of women and gender diverse individuals. Especially now, as we find our selves in an arms race for AI-industrial dominance, ensuring the teams building AI reflect society is more critical than ever. https://lnkd.in/gRCTD7fW

Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April to raise awareness about the need for more girls and women in the information and communication technology sector. The inclusion of women in tech is not only a matter of diversity and social justice but also a strategic imperative for businesses looking to thrive in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven world. According to Forbes, “It’s anticipated that by 2030, less than 25% of ICT specialists will be female.........in Europe today, only one in three STEM graduates is female.” Although women continue to be underrepresented in the tech world, we do witness names emerging that are making their mark and breaking barriers. A few of such names are Reshma Saujani, CEO of Girls Who Code; Whitney Wolf Herd, Founder of Bumble; and Aisha Bowe, Founder of STEMBoard. The New York Times writes about Saujani’s journey and the impact of Girls Who Code: “...Saujani has directly witnessed how STEM education has affected girls’ lives and created a ripple effect of wider social good. ‘One of my first students, Cora, had a father who was diagnosed with cancer,’ says Saujani. ‘She wanted to become a doctor because she wanted to save his life. It wasn’t until Girls Who Code that she saw the connection between coding and medicine, and she built an algorithm at age 14 to help detect whether a tumor is benign or malignant.’" Whitney Wolf Herd is the youngest woman ever to take a company public. Time Magazine states: “…..Whitney Wolfe Herd sat on her pink velvet couch in her canary-colored office and blinked back tears. Here she was, one of the top female CEOs in tech….” Aisha Bowe, another torchbearer of a female CEO promoting women's presence in the science and technology field. Bowe is the founder and CEO of STEMBoard, which is an award-winning tech company ranked on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in America. There are many initiatives to encourage women to be at the forefront of technology entrepreneurs and leaders. One such initiative is taken by Google called “Grow with Google.” It provides women with a platform equipped with varied tools to help them start and expand in business and technology. Cisco celebrates Girls in ICT Day by their initiative 'Women Rock IT' program. Their team showcases and highlights important female role models and the changes they are driving in the world. To create a more diverse workforce, leaders must unite to encourage more girls and young women to pursue education and careers in science, technology, and engineering. Conversations about gender diversity and women being underrepresented in STEM have gone on for years. Many initiatives and organisations have emerged with the aim of encouraging and empowering women to succeed in STEM careers. Although the gender gap is still wide, and there is still more work to be done, these domains are witnessing a rise of exceptional women leaders championing transformative change and redefining the narrative. In this episode, our host Raymond Ewoenam Klutse sits with one of such game-changers, Adora Nwodo, a multi-award-winning woman in STEM, with expertise spanning from Software Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Virtual and Augmented Reality Technologies, and many more. She's a global speaker and author whose passion for giving back to society has inspired many women to get into tech and excel in their careers. She is also the founder of NexaScale, a social enterprise aimed at fostering the growth and development of technology enthusiasts by providing resources and opportunities to help them start and scale their careers. Our discussion delves into her multifaceted life as a techie, from how she got into tech and the different roles she's explored, to exciting things she's does outside work like singing, cooking and being a DJ.
