Is using shock value in advertising worth the risk? In my opinion, almost NEVER. After working in social media for 4 years and helping dozens of brands go viral, I’ve made a fair few controversial posts in my day - and I regret them. They often resulted in a lot of views, which looked great to my clients and the companies I worked for, but did they result in anything substantial beyond a number on a screen? Most of the time…. No. 😳 While it might be tempting to stir the pot on social media to go viral and get your business’ name in front of a brand new audience, think about the implications of that: 👉 the audience most likely to interact with, and therefore see your post based on the algorithm, are going to be those who do NOT agree with you 👉 the comment section of your brand’s social media will become a negative place (if you don’t think it’ll get nasty over something as mundane as a social media post, guess again!) 👉 you’re approaching the possibility of alienating your long-term fans and customers with intentional provocation. I want you to say it with me: VIEWS 👏🏻 AREN’T 👏🏻 EVERYTHING 👏🏻 Focus on the positives of your brand and all it has to offer. You’re much more likely to convert a viewer to a customer with positive, informational content that doesn’t necessarily “blow up” than you are with content that’s being posted with the INTENTION to spark controversy.
