Few days back, I visited a public bank and saw an elderly man in a wheelchair waiting outside. He needed to update his passbook, but the bank lacked a ramp, preventing him from accessing the building. I helped him get inside with the assistance of the guard. Did you know that 80% of public buildings in Mumbai lack ramps for the disabled? This eye-opening statistic highlights the pressing need for improved accessibility across our city. 👥 Let's Take Action: It's time to come together and advocate for change. Inclusion must encompass procedural accommodations that account for the diverse needs of individuals, mainly persons with disabilities. Every step matters, whether it’s ensuring accessible communication, providing emotional and psychosocial support, or offering sensitivity training for officers. Real inclusion means creating an environment where victims and accused have fair, adequate access to justice, regardless of their abilities. Several such incidents get reported, but many go unnoticed. Policing can, unfortunately, be a site of discrimination for persons with disabilities. It's time we recognize this and advocate for real change. iProbono India is hosting a consultation on inclusive policing.
