It was a privilege to attend a Parliamentary Friends of Women in Sport event earlier this week celebrating our Paris Olympians and Paralympians, and in particular our women who brought home 13 of our 18 gold medals from the Olympics. The event was perfectly timed to coincide with the Albanese government’s announcement of the National Gender Equity in Sports Governance Policy, which will mandate that National Sporting Organisations must have a 50/50 gender split on their boards or risk losing federal funding. This Policy is a welcome step towards increasing diversity within sports adminstration in Australia. Currently, many boards—particularly national ones—have strict eligibility criteria, often requiring several years of prior board experience. To meet this important gender equity target, boards will need to rethink these requirements and make leadership positions more accessible to individuals who may not have traditional board experience but bring a wealth of other valuable skills and lived experiences. Recognising lived experience is a crucial pathway to achieving gender equity in governance. I admire Netball Australia's forward-thinking approach in appointing Liz Ellis to their board. By leveraging her extensive experience as an international netballer, they’ve enriched their board’s perspective and are better positioned to drive meaningful outcomes for the sport. This is a great example of how organisations can benefit from valuing diverse forms of expertise beyond traditional board experience. Women and girls still face too many barriers to participating in sport, resulting in a persistent gender gap in participation. The Health Barriers to Girls and Women in Sport report, published by the Women and Equalities Select Committee, states “The particular challenges faced by girls to sports participation arise from a combination of gender stereotypes that promote the very outdated notion that sport is a predominately male sphere. In addition, there are health and wellbeing issues experienced only, or predominately, by girls." In the U.K., many organisations advocate for equality, but as we know, actions speak louder than words. This gap is especially evident in the fitness industry’s appetite for accessibility and in the persistent disparities between support for Paralympic and Olympic athletes. How can we ensure the largest minority group in our country—the disabled community— is treated fairly when these inequalities continue to prevail? It’s time for tangible change and accountability. True equality means creating environments where everyone has access and opportunity, without compromise. Myanmar is making significant strides toward becoming a full member of IFMA, marking a new chapter for Muaythai in the region. Recent discussions with the Myanmar National Olympic Committee and its Muaythai Federation focused on aligning with IFMA’s values and ensuring adherence to key requirements like WADA compliance and gender equality. This commitment to inclusivity and fair play highlights Myanmar's dedication to the global Muaythai community. With support from the Olympic Council of Asia and the Myanmar NOC, the federation is on track to join IFMA’s growing family of over 150 nations.
