It was a privilege to attend a Parliamentary Friends of Women in Sport event earlier this week celebrating our Paris Olympians and Paralympians, and in particular our women who brought home 13 of our 18 gold medals from the Olympics. The event was perfectly timed to coincide with the Albanese government’s announcement of the National Gender Equity in Sports Governance Policy, which will mandate that National Sporting Organisations must have a 50/50 gender split on their boards or risk losing federal funding. This Policy is a welcome step towards increasing diversity within sports adminstration in Australia. Currently, many boards—particularly national ones—have strict eligibility criteria, often requiring several years of prior board experience. To meet this important gender equity target, boards will need to rethink these requirements and make leadership positions more accessible to individuals who may not have traditional board experience but bring a wealth of other valuable skills and lived experiences. Recognising lived experience is a crucial pathway to achieving gender equity in governance. I admire Netball Australia's forward-thinking approach in appointing Liz Ellis to their board. By leveraging her extensive experience as an international netballer, they’ve enriched their board’s perspective and are better positioned to drive meaningful outcomes for the sport. This is a great example of how organisations can benefit from valuing diverse forms of expertise beyond traditional board experience.
