September is deaf awareness month! And a time to celebrate our deaf communities. This month aims to promote awareness, encourage inclusion, celebrate identity, and support community organizations. Here are some ways to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month: Learn about deaf culture, history, and famous deaf people. Educate family and friends about deaf culture and how to use ASL. Participate in ASL meetups to connect with other deaf people, and advocate for accessibility (e.g. asking movie theaters to offer open-captioned showings)

Deaf Space is where Deaf people come together—sharing, creating Deaf culture, and making a space that fits us. From designing buildings and spaces to moving vases off tables and pinning speakers on Zoom, Deaf Space happens both face-to-face at festivals and clubs and online in our digital spaces. We have a Deaf Space Project to explore Deaf Spaces in Australia and beyond. This project will gather information from experts and the community to identify what makes great Deaf Spaces and how to grow them. What’s next? Community consultations across Australia in early 2025. Findings will shape our knowledge for building stronger Deaf Spaces. Deaf Space. Your space. Your culture.

In the UK 1 in 4 adults are deaf, rising to 80% in the over 70s. Yet healthcare professionals do not routinely receive any formal teaching on supporting deaf communication. Natasha Wilcock is a deaf doctor who shares the importance of understanding the unique needs of deaf people and appreciating deaf staff as an asset to our healthcare system. Natasha’s journey in medicine was marked by overcoming significant barriers, proving that deaf individuals can excel as doctors. Her work focuses on ensuring deaf people, both staff and patients, have access to healthcare services including not only care and education but all services in and around the NHS and particularly focuses on ensuring inclusive palliative care for deaf people. With special thanks to Darren who provided BSL interpreting at the live event. Watch the TEDxNHS 2024 talk: https://lnkd.in/eBecCnta

Why do we celebrate Australian sign Language (Auslan Day) on 13th April? Individuals with SATB2 Associated Syndrome may have absent or limited speech, and therefore are given opportunities to socially convey their needs, wants, feelings through different multi modal systems of communication. One of these systems of communication opportunities, include Auslan. You may be asking, what is Auslan? Auslan is the sign language used by the majority of the Australian Deaf community. Now, whilst the majority of people living with SATB2 Associated Syndrome are not deaf but may have levels of hearing loss, they prefer to communicate using sign language and see this method very easily adapted to their body language. Check out the links below to find out more about Auslan, via Deaf Connect #SATB2 #multimodality #Speechandlanguagetherapy #nonverbalcommunication #nonverbal #raredisease #Auslan
Happy Auslan Day from everyone at Deaf Connect! We have some fantastic resources for you to download, print and share with family and community to recognise the contributions of Deaf individuals and promote equal access to information through sign language. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Tyi6eH

🎞️ Great to see that cinemas across the country are to give priority screenings to the deaf and hard of hearing community. The aim of the partnership is to increase the number of captioned screenings, ensuring they are scheduled at different times throughout the week, while also raising deaf awareness among front-of-house cinema staff, including offering introductory British Sign Language (BSL) training. 📢 Today marks the start of Deaf Awareness Week! Did you know that approximately 15% of Deafblind individuals use British Sign Language (BSL)? However, when they lose their sight, they often struggle to access appropriate sight loss services that cater to their Deafness. That's why we're calling on the Scottish government to adopt the Nordic definition of deafblindness. By integrating vision and hearing loss support, we can ensure a more comprehensive approach. 🌟 Join us in defining deafblindness for a more inclusive future! 📝 Sign the declaration: https://lnkd.in/eaUHkvsM

I'm so honored to have played a very small role in the new exhibit at Gallaudet University, "We, Native Deaf People, Are Still Here!" It opened Thursday as part of the healing and renaming ceremony for building 103. The building is now òkànkwèpihëna tëtpi, Lenape for Circle of Signers. It was formerly the Dawes House, named for Senator Henry Dawes, an advocate for some deaf people and author of the 1887 Dawes Act. Go see the free exhibit if you're in DC!
