🎞️ Great to see that cinemas across the country are to give priority screenings to the deaf and hard of hearing community. The aim of the partnership is to increase the number of captioned screenings, ensuring they are scheduled at different times throughout the week, while also raising deaf awareness among front-of-house cinema staff, including offering introductory British Sign Language (BSL) training. Excelent message from Claudia Gordon about the barriers deaf individuals face. I especially appreciated how she mentioned barriers to healthcare. If it is difficult to talk to the Doctor, you might be less likely to get a 'small problem' addressed until it becomes a big issue. If it is difficult to request accommodations, how likely is that individual to request the support that would help them succeed in the workplace? If it is difficult to ask for help in a store, how likely is it that they will return? Thinking about how we, as organizations and individuals, can reduce these barriers is really important.

September is deaf awareness month! And a time to celebrate our deaf communities. This month aims to promote awareness, encourage inclusion, celebrate identity, and support community organizations. Here are some ways to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month: Learn about deaf culture, history, and famous deaf people. Educate family and friends about deaf culture and how to use ASL. Participate in ASL meetups to connect with other deaf people, and advocate for accessibility (e.g. asking movie theaters to offer open-captioned showings)

This Autumn I was lucky enough to work on a new DIY series for the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust with Drummer TV (C) It was a real pleasure to work on a show with and for the BSL community, the show’s going to absolutely brilliant! But as a person with no deafness, it made me realise how under-represented deaf people are within the UK’s broadcasting industry and opened my eyes to a world I never knew about. While apparently about one in five adults in the UK suffers from deafness of some kind, less than 1% of people working in broadcasting are deaf or have partial hearing. You can read more in the recent Unmuted report from the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity, which calls for “systematic changes in film and television industry to better support deaf workers”: https://lnkd.in/d_GYAxJA I was truly inspired by my team and felt very lucky to work with them creating this incredible show! #Inclusivity #BSL #InclusiveMedia #deafawareness

“It’s important to teach deaf awareness to hearing people in order to help them understand deaf culture.” Through online and in-person workshops, we have been working with students from the Deaf Academy to develop a greater understanding of their needs and preferences when it comes to information about weather and climate. As Deaf Awareness Month concludes, let's commit to action and build a world where everyone can communicate effectively. In this video, I mentioned a few: ✅ Support legislation like the Communication Video and Technology Act (S. 2494) which aims to update the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010. ✅ Budget for the provision of qualified sign language interpreters and captioning in all settings. ✅ Don't overlook the unique communication needs of individuals who are DeafBlind. ✅ Become active allies and advocate for the Deaf community. ✅ Learn ASL to bridge the communication gap and foster understanding. Communication is key to full societal participation. The Deaf community deserves equal access to communication. Let's break down these barriers and ensure everyone can connect, learn, and thrive. #BeyondAwareness #DeafAwarenessMonth #InclusionMatters #CommunicationAccess #EffectiveCommunication
