I am so excited to announce the launch of the Skin For All Blog. An informative, informal way to connect with the SFA audience. It will cover a myriad of stories, experiences and projects run by SFA and the newly created SFA Academy! The first 3 blogs have been published; written by yours truly. As a disabled doctor I have faced discrimination in all areas from attitudes of colleagues, issues getting accessible equipment, in recruitment and training and lots more. Important read from the BMJ sadly spelling out the lack of access for so many disabled doctors. Disabled doctors are a huge asset to the health service and we deserve better. Breathe Arts Health Research have developed a groundbreaking new way to help parents recover from postnatal depression (PND). Breathe Melodies for Mums is a bespoke ten-week singing programme designed specifically to meet the needs of those experiencing low mood or anxiety after having a baby. The programme is grounded in extensive scientific research that found group singing could reduce symptoms of PND by 35% in just six weeks, as well as improving maternal self-confidence and enhancing the bond between mums and their babies. This man, and his 15-minute TED Talk, has changed my life. His honesty. His guts. His bravery to question. And his deeply compassionate nature. He opened my eyes to the possibility of a different approach to my own depression. After his fantastic presentation, I was lucky enough to chat with him briefly. Fortunately for me - we’re still chatting today. I urge everyone to watch this. We are all connected to fragile mental health in some way. Our own. Someone we know. In the UK 1 in 4 adults are deaf, rising to 80% in the over 70s. Yet healthcare professionals do not routinely receive any formal teaching on supporting deaf communication. Natasha Wilcock is a deaf doctor who shares the importance of understanding the unique needs of deaf people and appreciating deaf staff as an asset to our healthcare system. Natasha’s journey in medicine was marked by overcoming significant barriers, proving that deaf individuals can excel as doctors. Her work focuses on ensuring deaf people, both staff and patients, have access to healthcare services including not only care and education but all services in and around the NHS and particularly focuses on ensuring inclusive palliative care for deaf people.
